  2. Birth • Correta was born on April 27, 1927 • Heiberger, Alabama

  3. Growing up • Correta grew up on a farm • picked cotton to help make money for her family • Correta and her sister knew Segregation was wrong • Correta had two siblings.

Education • Walked 5 miles a day to go to school • Valedictorian of her graduating class at Lincoln High School. • Bachelor of Art in Music and education • Received a scholarship to New England Conservatory of Music in Boston, Massachusetts to study concert singing. • Earned her degree in voice and violin

  5. First Date • They met at College in Boston as Martin Luther King Jr was studying Theology. • Martin Luther told her “you know you have everything I ever wanted in a woman”.

  6. Marriage • Martin Luther King Jr and Correta Scottwere married on June 18, 1953 at her parents house.

  7. Family • Correta had four kids • Yolanda Denise King • Martin Luther King III • Dexter Scott King • Bernice Albertine King

  8. Freedom Concerts • Correta would useher musical background to put on freedom concerts to help raise money forthe civil rights movements. • They had Poetry • Narration – story telling • Music • Purpose: to tell the story of the Civil Rights Movement

  9. Civil Rights Movement • After Martin Luther King Jrwas killed, she kept on the civil rights movement to fulfill her husband cause and dream. • She became a public speaker

  10. President Reagan • President Reagan signed a bill making Dr. Martin Luther King Jr’sbirthday a national holiday. • His birthday is January 15.

  11. Death Correta passed away on January 30, 2006, in Mexico She was 78 years old
