  5. AKSUM • Became a prosperous kingdom mostly because trade routes from the Red Sea into Egypt and the interior of Africa

  6. AKSUM • King Ezana • Conquered Kush • made Christianity the official religion of Aksum

  7. Fall of Aksum • Environmental problems made land less productive

  8. 2.) Persians had gained control over much of the Red Sea trade • Islamic forces won control of both Arabian and African sides of the Red Sea
