  1. Bioengineering and Superheroes By Yours Truly

  2. Spiderman, Captain America, Superman, Hulk, and others… • Allthese superheroes could hypothetically be created through bioengineering • How? Just wait and see.

  3. Me • Born in Columbus, OH • Lived in Ohio, North Carolina, Colorado, Arizona, and California • Currently 18 • Went to Desert Vista High School • Go to U.C. Berkeley with intended majors of Bioengineering and Computer Science • Music, Sports, and Videogames

  4. What is Bioengineering? • The application of engineering principles to various biological systems • Designing prosthetics • Imaging of organs • Protein engineering • Tissue Regeneration • Genome analysis

  5. Areas • Bioinformatics • Biomechanics • Bioimaging • Tissue Engineering • Biomedicine • Synthetic Biology

  6. Some Basic Principles • The Genome • DNA/RNA • Proteins

  7. DNA and RNA • Deoxyribonucleic Acid and Ribonucleic Acid • DNA: A-T, G-C • “Life’s Program” • Code’s for certain proteins and how much of each should be made

  8. Amino Acids • The building blocks of proteins • 26 natural amino acids

  9. Proteins • Primary, Secondary, Tertiary • They perform a multitude of functions in your body, not just building muscles and whatnot • Enzymes can help digest food, cut DNA, get rid of toxins, etc…

  10. Some Methodology • PCR • Transformation • Electrophoresis • Bacteria Incubation • Computer Modeling

  11. Transformation • Putting plasmids in bacteria so they can perform a certain function

  12. Plasmids • Circular DNA • Great way to add DNA to E. coli

  13. Plasmid Cutting and Creation • Special Enzymes cut DNA at certain points. • DNA with sticky ends will automatically combine with other DNA with complimentary ends

  14. So How Can Bioengineering Make Superheroes? • Modify specific genes of humans • Splice in genes of other species (for example, in the case of Spiderman, you would need to add the genes of a spider)
