  2. Carbohydrates • Most source important energy for body • Two types - Simple (sugars short energy) • - Complex (starches long energy) • 4 cals per gram of carbs • Primary source of energy • Complex food : Crackers, pasta, rice, etc • Simple foods: Milk, fruits, vitamins, etc

  3. Fats • Stores energy for later use • Types ( Saturated, Unsaturated, Trans ) • Building block for hormones • 30% of daily cal from fat • Foods: Meats, Fish, Oils, etc

  4. Protein • Builds, Replaces, Maintains tissues • Types ( Complete, Incomplete ) • Breaks down into Amino Acids • Found in almost every living cells • Food: Milk, meats, etc

  5. Fiber • Prevents bowl problems • Types ( Soluble, Insoluble ) • Most plant sources contain both types • Different fiber used for different things • Foods: Dried beans, Split peas, Lentils, etc

  6. Vitamins • Required for growth, energy, and health • Types ( A, B, C, D, E, F ) • Without, couldn’t survive life • Needed to make enzymes and hormones • Foods: Poultry, Fish, Broccoli

  7. Minerals • Help grow, develop, health • Types ( Macominerals, trace ) • Body made up of 4-5% • Used to perform different functions • Foods: Beef, Bananas, Dairy

  8. Water • Required for all chemical reactions • Moves nutrients around body • Removes waste • 70% of body is water • Healthy people drink 3 gallons • Foods: juicy fruit, juicy vegetables
