  6. Design Brief Target Consumer People who would benefit from this product the most are those who have garage doors. Problem Statement Crimes of opportunity are created when homeowners forget to close their garage door. Design Statement To design a notification system that can electronically notify (e.g. E-Mail, text) the state of the garage door, whether open or close.

  7. Design Criteria • Efficient • Unlimited range • Cost effective • Compact • Integrate into existing garage door systems • Prototype in 2 months • Notify user of state of garage door • Durable

  8. Solution A: “Laser Catcher”

  9. Solution B: Garage Button

  10. Solution C: Overhead Motor

  11. SCAMPERR Solution A: “Laser Catcher”

  12. SCAMPERR Solution B: Garage Button

  13. SCAMPERR Solution C: Overhead motor

  14. Selection Matrix

  15. Science/Engineering Principles • WiFi • Infrared beams • Computer Networks • RFID • Electricity • Communications • E-mail / Cellular network

  16. Final Design • Infrared beam • Beam broken; garage door closed • Beam unbroken; garage door open • When open for long periods; notify • When car is out of range and • garage is open; notify

  17. Materials List • Infrared sensor (Transmitter / Receiver) • Computer • Electronics board to process signal • Server
