  1. 3rd Grade Children • with Autism By: Audra Golson EDUC 1310

Red Flags! • No big smiles or joyful expressions by 6 months or after • No mimicking sounds, smiles, or facial expressions by 9 months • No babbling by 12 months • No back-and-forth gestures such as pointing, showing, reaching or waving by 12 months • No words by 16 months • No meaningful, two-word phrases (not including imitating or repeating) by 24 months • Any loss of speech, babbling or social skills at any age

  3. School Aged Kids Educational Plan (IEP) and a Section 504 can make certain accommodations and modifications in the classroom to help students. These accommodations and modifications are based on the individual needs of the student. Educational Plan (IEP) A personalized program that takes into account a child’s strengths and weaknesses, targeted educational goals, and approaches to help him or her reach these goals. Section 504 Section 504 is a federal law designed to protect the rights of individuals with disabilities in programs and activities that receive Federal financial assistance from the U.S. Department of Education (ED).

  4. Accommodations for 3rd Graders An accommodation changes a procedure in the classroom but does not result in a change in what is measured. Examples • Give students extra time to take a test • Have students sit in the front of the classroom • Hand out written study guides • Have daily or weekly communication times between parents and teachers

  5. Modifications for 3rd Graders A modification is an actual change in school work or how the school work is completed. Examples • Cutting homework or test questions in half • Adjusted grading to weighted grading • Allow students to use calculators during test • Changes in curriculum to suit a child's needs

Things parents can specifically ask for • Visual or written schedules:Teachers can have laminated schedules or • pictures to show events for the day. • Classroom aids: A hired individual to help enforce behavior, enrich learning • abilities, or be a communicator. • Moving about time: Allow students to have a period of time to move about • in a safe environment. • Pairs: Allow students to pair up in a group during certain classroom • activities. • Stress balls: Allow students to you a stress ball when thing • become over whelming for them.
