  1. Artisium Zeus / Poseidon George Noakes

  2. Background • Made in ca 460 bc (Classical period) • Made by Kalamis • Bronze statue • Larger than life, standing at 209 cm tall • Found in two pieces at the bottom of the Mediterranean sea • The statue is thought to represent either Zeus or Poseidon

  3. Points of interest • The original eyebrows were comprised of silver, his lips of copper and the eyes are not completely gone • We know the statue represents a god due to the stance, position and perfect musculature • Meant to be seen from one angle, full frontal • The god in the statue is throwing an object, it is unknown what the object is • High level of detail in the statue

  4. Zeus or Posidon • The God represented in the statue is shown to be throwing an object, however this object was not added into the statue • Could have been throwing a lightening bolt (Zeus) or a trident (Poseidon) • However the debate will continue as there is no definitive way of making it clear

  5. Head isn’t facing straight forward, development from Kouros statues Arms suggest throwing action Little strain on muscles, perhaps to show he doesn’t need to as he’s a god Perfect physique, represents a god Perfect Physique Legs suggests statues moving Feet not facing forward, right foot off the ground

  6. You can see the individual locks of hair, repetitive but not stylised Thought that the eyebrows were originally made out of silver Eyes are missing Intense facial expression suggests he’s throwing an object

  7. Development from Archaic • Not a kouros statue, instead displaying his god like power with his arms raised and foot off the ground • No ‘Archaic smile’, or Almond • Similar to Kritios boy, head isn’t facing forward

  8. Woodford • “The Artist has succeeded in producing a vivid and convincing figure through cleverly varying the position of the limbs. But his success was not total. We’ve noticed that unexpected problems sometimes arise as by-products of new and positive achievements. A novel sense of movement has caused two new problems to emerge”

  9. Woodford’s criticisms • Firstly, though the torso should be dramatically affected by the activity of the limbs, it is as still as it would have been if the statue was standing still • Secondly, though the statue is “splendid” from the front and back, it is difficult to understand from the sides

  10. Significance • Shows the capability of bronze, as oppose to marble • If it was in marble the arms would most likely snap off, and the sculpture would need an extremely large piece of marble to create such a piece
