  1. 3 Uses of Medical Radiation Jenifer McConnell

  2. Medical Uses of Radiation My project is on three medical uses of Radiation --- • X-rays, diagnostic. • Radiation Therapy. • Radiation Sterilization

  3. X-rays • X-rays are forms of radiant energy, like light or radio waves. • X-rays can penetrate the body, which allows a radiologist to produce pictures of internal structures.

  4. Radiation X-rays • Radiologist can view these on photographic film or on a TV or computer monitor. • X-rays are produce when a switch is turned on. No radiation remains when the switch is off. • Common radiation dosage millisievert (mSv). Other is rad, rem, roentagen, sievert, and gray.

  5. Radiation X-rays • Getting a chest x-ray is the same has being outdoors for ten days. • Higher dose of x-rays they inject a dye into you like iodine and barium. • If you are pregnant and need x-rays it could cause risks or complications to your birth. • In x-rays different organs and tissues have different sensitivity radiation exposure.

  6. X-rays are used not to see flesh.

  7. Radiation Therapy Radiation therapy is to help Cancer patients. It shrinks the tumor or it kills cancer cells. It also helps with the pain.

  8. Radiation Therapy • Also called Ionizing Radiation, kills cancer cells or shrinks tumors. • Radiation causes damage to cancer cells and normal cells but normal cells can recover from the radiation and function properly.

  9. Radiation Therapy • Radiation therapy is to kill the most cancer cells it can limiting the harm to nearby health issues. • Half of all cancer patients receive some type of radiation therapy. • Radiation therapy may be used to treat almost all solid types of tumors.

  10. Radiation Therapy • Radioactive material will leave the body from saliva, sweat, and urine before the radioactivity decays. • Radiation can be used to help reduce symptoms like pain • External radiation therapy will not make the patient radioactive. Patients do not need to avoid being around other people because of the treatment.

  11. Radiation Therapy Internal radiation therapy (interstitial, intracavitary, or intraluminal) that involves sealed implants emits radioactivity, so a stay in the hospital may be needed and precaution to make the staff safe.

  12. Radiation Sterilization Radiation Sterilization is used on mostly medical tools. Radiation Sterilization replaced the method of over steaming the tools, under high and low pressure.

  13. Medical Radiation Sterilization • The medical products that can be sterilized with irradiation are mainly disposable medical products and medical package materials, for instance, surgery blades, surgery pens, surgery film, surgery brush, blood catheter, drainage apparatus, surgery sew machine, injector, aspirator, apparatus transfusion , and nozzles.

  14. Radiation Sterilization • Ultraviolet light irradiation (UV, from a germicidal lamp) is useful only for sterilization of surfaces and some transparent objects. • Electron beam processing is also commonly used for medical device sterilization. • Gamma rays are used to sterilization of disposable medical equipment

  15. Radiation Sterilization Products.
