  1. How does Tennessee Williams use setting and stage directions in the play?

  2. Scene 10 – Blanche has been rejected by Mitch. What do the opening stage directions tell us about the state Blanche is in? How does Stanley’s costume contrast with Blanche’s appearance? (p122) Go through the scene: Look for references to music What indications do we have of Blanche’s deteriorating reason? What evidence do we have of Blanche’s inability to face truth? How does Williams use the stage directions on p128? Notice Stanley’s last line – ‘Tiger’ – a reference to an animal! Notice the use of the music stage direction to signify the rape

  3. Are there any ways in which Blanche and Stanley are similar? Why does Stanley rape Blanche?

  4. Blanche is representative of the Old South Stanley is representative of New America (post-war) What could we say about the Old South and New America from what we know about the characters?

  5. Scene 11 Notice the stage directions at the beginning of the scene– can you link them to other scenes? What can we say about Stella and Eunice’s lines: Stella: I couldn’t believe her story and go on living with Stanley Eunice: Don’t ever believe it. Life has got to go on. No matter what happens, you’ve got to keep on going. Notice the stage directions as Blanche comes out of the bathroom (p133)

  6. How has Blanche changed from the way she was at the beginning of the play? Notice the music as the doctor arrives What do the stage directions on p138-9 tell us? How do they link to earlier scenes? Why does Williams choose to describe the doctor and matron as he does? Notice the stage direction on p140 – which is the most significant image there? Look at the directions on p141 linked to the doctor – what do they say about Blanche?

  7. Notice the stage directions at the end of the scene – notice they are different to the film What can we surmise from the directions? What does the last line of the play suggest? This game is seven-card stud
