  1. 51 10/16/07 Developed and Developing Countries DEVELOPEDCOUNTRY: industrialized; a country with all four types of industry flourishing --Western Europe, North America, Australia, Japan and South Korea --5% of the world DEVELOPING COUNTRY: country with only primary, secondary, and some tertiary industry, but very few (if any) quaternary industries --China, Mexico, Brazil, Argentina, Venezuela, Chile, and a few other places around the world --15% of the world UNDERDEVELOPED COUNTRY: country with primary and secondary industries, but not much (if any) tertiary industries --most found in Africa, Asia, and Latin America --80% of the world • Measurements of Economic Development: • high population • poor schools • low literacy rates (not many people can read and write) • shorter life expectancy • not enough jobs (high unemployment) • poor health care
