  3. Uplift of Earth’s crust How do fault block mountains form? When tension forces pull Earth’s plates away rift valleys and faults are formed. Fault-block mountains are sharp jagged mountains made of huge, tilted blocks of rock that are seperated from surrounding rocks by faults.
