1. FLORIDA KEYS MARINE TRIP Appleseed Expeditions partners with educators to provide school trips for students that incorporate learning, adventure and service. Their guides teach on a range of subjects in the field such as ecological sustainability, rainforest symbiosis, and leadership through service.

2. FLORIDA KEYS MARINE TRIP Watch lives being changed as hope blooms when students assist our Appleseed service projects.

3. FLORIDA KEYS MARINE TRIP They will be doing things like tutoring children of migrant workers, doing clean-up and repairs at a daycare center for impoverished communities, and planting coral that has become endangered along the Florida Keys.

5. FLORIDA KEYS MARINE TRIP Trip Highlights • Mentoring/serving the children of the RCMA. • Night wade along the coast of Key Largo • Studying the shallow bay ecosystem and conducting net pulls • Snorkel along the coral reef • Explore mangrove habitat by kayak in Islamorada • Squid dissection

6. FLORIDA KEYS MARINE TRIP Accommodations • Marina Del Mar Resort next to Holiday Inn in Key Largo • 4 students per room • Boys and girls will be in separate separate buildings if possible, if not separate floors. • Chaperones will stay in separate rooms, close to students • Students will be able to choose swim partners

FLORIDA KEYS MARINE TRIP MEALS • Breakfast will be buffet style at hotel • Lunch will typically be boxed sandwiches • Dinner meals will include salad, main dish, dessert, and drinks at a local restaurant or pizza • There will always be vegetarian options *Each student is reponsible for own lunch on the way there and dinner on the way back*

8. FLORIDA KEYS MARINE TRIP TRANSPORTATION • Chartered buses • (A/C and DVD player) • Depart TCMS around 6:00 a.m.(TBD) • Boats: varies 25 to 45 people per boat • Kayaks: Tandem ( two seats)

The full cost of trip w/o discount is $525 If you register after July 15th, there is a deposit of $100, followed by 5 monthly payments of $85 each.

10. FLORIDA KEYS MARINE TRIP TRIP CANCELLATION INSURANCE INFORMATION The price of your trip does not include trip cancellation insurance. In the event of a cancellation, such traveler may lose a portion or all of their funds paid. It is strongly recommended that travelers purchase trip cancellation insurance to recover funds they may possibly lose due to a cancellation. Trip insurance is inexpensive and worth it if a traveler wants to protect their cost. One great place to check rates is www.travelinsurancecenter.com. You can use their “Policy Picker” to compare rates with several great companies. The average costs of these types of policies are approximately $35 to $50

11. FLORIDA KEYS MARINE TRIP Weather: • Key Largo & Islamorada weather: The lower Florida Keys have to be some of the sunniest and warmest places in the United States year round. The climate in the winter maintains at around 75-80 degrees with warmer days mixed in. • The water will be in low to mid 70s and it is recommended that students rent a wet suit.

12. FLORIDA KEYS MARINE TRIP Money: • There will be time for students to shop for souvenirs and snacks both at the local ships store and a Keys souvenirs shop. We suggest that students bring from $50to $75 dollars in spending money for this adventure.

13. FLORIDA KEYS MARINE TRIP Health & Safety: Because the Florida Keys program is a water-based program, all students are expected to participate in a water swim test. This test will evaluate each student’s swimming capabilities to determine which students need closer supervision by chaperones or trained staff. Additionally, students will wear swim vests when snorkeling, life vests when kayaking and participate in a buddy system for accountability safety.

14. FLORIDA KEYS MARINE TRIP Sun: • To protect you from excessive sun exposure you should wear sunglasses and apply sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher, with both UVA and UVB protection. Sunscreen should be generously applied to all exposed parts of the body approximately 30 minutes before sun exposure and should be reapplied after swimming or vigorous activity. Students should also drink plenty of fluids and avoid strenuous exercise when the temperature is high.

15. FLORIDA KEYS MARINE TRIP Packing List: • Clothes for daily activities, such as shorts, jeans, capris and t-shirts • Comfortable walking shoes • Sandals/Flip-flops • Water shoes • Light jacket • Umbrella or rain jacket • MODEST swimsuit and towel (recommend 2 each) • Appleseed Expeditions t-shirt (to be worn on the 1st day of trip, may be provided upon arrival)
