  2. Slay the Dragon • ! • Mastering MLA may seem like like a daunting task requiring the courage of a mythical medieval warrior. It is not as impossible or difficult as it may seem.

  3. The Weapons & Tools • All the information you require is located in your text. • Use it like an owner’s manual or guidebook. • Always consult your text for the correct application of MLA.

  4. Elements of MLA • In-Text Documentation- (pages 96-102) • List of Works Cited-(pages 103-130) • Format-(130-132) • Sample- (133-135)

  5. Three Options for Citing a Source • Quote- Use of the exact words of an author. • Paraphrasing- Use of a rewording of a text in about the same number of words but without the same word order or sentence structure. • Summarize- The use of one’s own words and sentence structure to condense someone else’s text into a briefer but still faithful version.

  6. Signal Phrase • A phrase used to attribute quoted, paraphrased, or summarized material to a source, as in “she said” or “he claimed.” • If you mention the author in a signal phrase put only the page numbers. If you do not mention the author in a signal phrase, put his or her last name in parentheses along with the page numbers.

  7. Works Cited-(pages 103-130) • A works cited list provides full bibliographic information for every source cited in your text. • Start your list on a new page. • Center the title and double-space the entire list . • Each entry begins at the left margin, and subsequent lines should be indented one-half inch ( five spaces). • Alphabetize the list by authors’ last names or if there is no author listed, by the title.
