  1. AUDIENCE RESEARCH DRIVE, (NICOLAS WINDING REFN, 2011) Drive, a film that follows a mysterious man’s life as he juggles his three jobs and falls for his neighbour, is a thriller but comes under the sub genre of crime/drama. Drive is officially rated a certificate 18 for ‘strong, brutal, bloody violence, language and some nudity’. Although the film doesn’t contain any sex scenes or scenes of drug use, the rating is still very high purely because of the amount of, and the extremely graphic nature of violence. For example, a scene where a man is beaten to death in an elevator, a scene where a man in stabbed in the eye with a fork and a distressing scene where a character is drowned in the sea. • The target audience for Drive is men over 18. This is because • The film itself is called ‘Drive’ and is centred around cars, stunt driving, mechanics and a getaway driver. • The main character, the hero, is a man. • The high amount of graphic violence, gun use and crime.

  2. AUDIENCE RESEARCH DISTURBIA, (D.J CARUSO, 2007) Disturbia is a 2007 thriller starring Shia Lebouf. The film is a loose remake of Hitchcock’s Rear Window and is a story of a teenager who suspects his neighbour is a murderer. Disturbia is officially rated a certificate 15 for ‘sequences of terror and violence’. There are no scenes of smoking or drug use, sex scenes and not much profanity, but the gory scenes and violent nature of the plot raise the rating to a certificate 15. • I think the target audience for Disturbia is young people (age 15 and above) because: • The main characters are teenagers • The horror scenes are mild • Older viewers may not find the film gritty or scary enough

  3. AUDIENCE RESEARCH The director wants to the audience to feel anxious, nervous, shocked, anticipation and excitement whilst watching The certification for thrillers can range but is usually high, a 15 or an 18. This can change depending on the sub genre, the thriller/horror hybrid is usually a high rating due to gory scenes.
