  2. BIOGRAPHY Jonathan Todd Singer-Songwriter-Guitarist Born February 28, 1994 Grand Prairie, AB Jonathan Todd at 16 is a young talent with an old heart, filled with love for classic blues and country, but with plenty of room left for the more contemporary music of Dwight Yoakam, Tom Waits, Leonard Cohen and others. Classic or contemporary, traditional or rock, they all have contributed to creating Jonathan’s unique guitar style, which is a perfect backing to his powerful, soulful voice. When Jonathan was 10 he heard Johnny Cash’s I Walk the Line for the first time. He was captivated by that song’s electric guitar riff and absolutely had to learn it. His father taught him to play the line on an old acoustic guitar and there was no looking back. He has followed an incredibly diverse musical path, learning the styles of such artists as Bob Dylan, Merle Haggard and Joni Mitchell... the traditional blues of Muddy Waters and Buddy Guy...the old-time country of Jimmy Rodgers… as well as the effervescence of mountain bluegrass. “My first memories of playing in front of people were back in elementary school in Winnipeg,” says Jonathan. “I played the piano and sang Long Black Veil and I wasn’t really very nervous at all.” Jonathan went on to the Manitoba Conservatory of Music, where he studied guitar styles for two years from the classical and experimental guitarist Kurt Tittlemier. Studying with Kurt introduced him to Jazz, Classical, Bossa, Cajun, and Bluegrass. It was during those two years that Jonathan earned two scholarships for his accomplishments in Jazz guitar.

  3. JONATHAN TODD At just 14, The Forks Market in Winnipeg granted him a coveted license to busk. One day after a performance he was invited to play as a promotional artist for the Canadian Country Music Awards festival being held in Winnipeg that year. That lead to more gigs. Jonathan says, “I was invited to play at a place called Gordies Coffee House in Winnipeg, which featured headline musicians and open mic nights. I played there a few times and ended up being one of their headliners.” Living in Winnipeg let Jonathan experience first hand the Aboriginal Peoples Choice Music Awards, where he could hear the music of artists like Buffy Ste. Marie, Tracy Bone and Art Napoleon to name only a few. He has also spent time learning pow-wow singing, drumming and dancing. Jonathan was selected for the Winnipeg Folk Festival-Young Performers Program in the summers of 2009 and 2010,where he performed and was mentored by Canadian recording artists Tannis Slimmon and Kinnie Starr respectively. In February he was invited to play for the Four Hosts First Nations at Vancouver’s 2010 Winter Olympics and shortly afterwards in June he released his first self-titled album. In addition, Jonathan has had a very active summer of 2010 with solo performances at the Harmony Arts Festival in West Vancouver, The First Peoples Arts Festival in Victoria, opening act performances for The Jardines, Johnny DeMarco and Stonebolt at the Yale Hotel in Vancouver and opening for the Australian Indigenous Band OKA in Ladner where he was invited to join the band for their last set. Jonathan is now living and attending high school in Delta, BC, where he has been actively pursuing a career as a performing artist and is currently composing and performing music for the APTN children's series Nehiyawetan. On October 1 he will be having his CD release concert at the Anza Club in Vancouver hosted by Kirk Douglas of Soundlounge Productions. Jonathan is planning his second CD release for late 2010 and is planning a tour of the Western Canada country and folk festival circuit for the summer of 2011 with the highlight being The Dreaming Festival in Australia.
