  1. POD basic advanced These are the scores of six students on their science test. What would the next person need to score to make the class average 86? 75, 92, 80, 77, 88, 92, ____ Find the mean, median, mode, and range 2, 18, 12, 8, 7, 8, 15 mean: 10 median: 8 504 + x 7 mode: 8 (7) = 86 (7) range: 16 504 + x = 602 −504 −504 x = 98

  2. Quartiles Quartiles are the values that divide a list of numbers into quarters. Put the list of numbers in order Cut the list into four equal parts (start by finding the median) 3. The Quartiles are at the "cuts"

  3. Example: 3, 3, 1, 4, 4, 5, 2, 4, 6, 2 1. Put the list in order 1, 2, 2, 3, 3, 4, 4, 4, 5, 6 2. Find the median (middle) 3 + 4 2 = 3.5 3. Divide the list into quarters Q1 = 2 Q2 = 3.5 4. Identify the Quartiles Q3 = 4

  4. The Interquartile Range is from Q1 to Q3: To calculate it just subtract Quartile 1 from Quartile 3 1, 2, 2, 3, 3, 4, 4, 4, 5, 6 Q1 = 2 Q3 − Q1 = Q2 = 3.5 4 − 2 = 2 Q3 = 4 The interquartile range is 2

  5. Remember the steps: 1. Put the list in order 2. Find the median (middle) 3. Divide the list into quarters 4. Identify the Quartiles 5. Q3 − Q1 = interquartile range

  6. Let’s try it: 8, 12, 8, 9, 8, 7, 10 1. Put the list in order 2. Find the median (middle) 7, 8, 8, 8, 9, 10, 12 3. Divide the list into quarters Q1 = 8 4. Identify the Quartiles Q2 = 8 Q3 = 10 5. Find the interquartile range (Q3 − Q1) 10 − 8 = 2

  7. Let’s try it: 24, 22, 20, 24, 25, 21 1. Put the list in order 2. Find the median (middle) 20, 21, 22, 24, 24, 25 22 + 24 2 =23 3. Divide the list into quarters Q1 = 21 4. Identify the Quartiles Q2 = 23 Q3 =24 5. Find the interquartile range (Q3 − Q1) 24 − 21= 3
