  16. Culturelle:Bonjour • When young people meet their teachers, they always use, “Bonjour.” Young French people are generally more formal with adults than their friends. • Young people in France address adults as “Monsieur, Madame or Mademoiselle.” The last name is not used in greeting adults. • You say, “Bonjour Monsieur, etc.”

  17. Tu et Vous • In French greetings, a distinction is made between formal and informal terms of address. • When you are speaking to an individual in French, you need to choose between the formal (vous) and informal (tu) forms of address.

  18. Culturelle:Vous • Young French people are generally more formal with adults than their friends. • Young people in France address adults using “Vous .”

  19. The informal tu is used as follows: • Between students of the same age group and young people in general • Between people who are on a first-name basis • Among family members • With children • With animals • In some French-speaking countries, especially in Africa, the tu form, rather than vous, is used almost exclusively when speaking to a single individual.

  20. The formal vous is used as follows: • With and between people who are not on a first-name basis • Among people who are meeting for the first time • With those who are older than you • When addressing more than one person • When speaking with someone whom you don’t know very well, who is older than you, or who is in a higher position, vous is in order. • In cases of doubt, always use vous.
