  1. DO Now 5min Enter Silently. Put all electronic devices away. If I see it after the bell I will take it. ALL FOOD STAYS AT FRONT TABLE. Pick up daily handouts. Move to Assigned seat. Start your Do Now in the Do Now form. Raise your hand with questions related to the Do Now. Hold all other questions (remember parking lot for unanswered questions). Determine the average atomic mass: Magnesium has three naturally occurring isotopes. 78.70% of Magnesium atoms exist as Magnesium-24 (23.9850 g/mol), 10.03% exist as Magnesium-25 (24.9858 g/mol) and 11.17% exist as Magnesium-26 (25.9826 g/mol). What is the average atomic mass of Magnesium? 24.29 g/mol

  2. Homework 5min • Any questions?

  3. Tutoring 2min • Today after school 2:30-3:30pm in 529 with Mrs.Murphy • Thursday after school 2:30-3:30 in 710 with Ms.Wheeler and Mrs.Elam-Rice

  4. Binder Check Tomorrow 2 min • I am looking for 3 things • That you have a 3 ring binder and it has appropriate dividers/sections • Your signed parent syllabus (print off website if you don’t have it) pg1 • Atoms, Elements, and Ions guided notes (9/4/2013) pg11 ** The item must be at the correct page and be complete (other missing items can be obtained from the website or from a classmate)

  5. Review : Atomic Structure 8min • Get the Answer in your head I could call on you!

  6. IONS 2 min • IONSare atoms or groups of atoms with a positive or negative charge. • Taking away an electron from an atom gives a CATION with a positive charge • Adding an electron to an atom gives an ANION with a negative charge. • To tell the difference between an atom and an ion, look to see if there is a charge in the superscript! • Examples: Na Ca I O Na+ Ca+2 I- O-2 Turn and Talk

  7. Forming Cations & Anions 2min A CATION forms when an atom loses one or more electrons. An ANION forms when an atom gains one or more electrons F + e- --> F- Mg --> Mg2+ + 2 e- Choral – loose/gain

  8. PREDICTING ION CHARGES 3 min In general • metals (Mg) lose electrons ---> cations • nonmetals (F) gain electrons ---> anions Left = Lose Righ = gain

  9. -4 -3 -2 -1 +1 +2 Charges on Common Ions 3 min +3 By losing or gaining e-, atom has same number of e-’s as nearest Group 8A atom.

  10. Learning Check – Counting 6 min Turn and Talk State the number of protons, neutrons, and electrons in each of these ions. 39 K+16O -241Ca +2 19 8 20 #p+ ______ ______ _______ #no ______ ______ _______ #e- ______ ______ _______

  11. Ions Practice 7 min K O Loses 1 e-  K+ Gains 2 e-  O2- ** Work through the provided handout silent and solo for 6 minutes

  12. Mole and Avogadro’s Number 4min • Video (notes follow along) • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g_BelGwRxG8

  13. Mole Practice Problems 4min • In 3 moles of 0xygen • How many Oxygen molecules are there? • How many O atoms are there?

  14. Mole Practice Problems 2min • Calculate the number of 40.0g of carbon (C).

  15. Mole Practice Problems 2min • How many carbon atoms are there in 40 g?

  16. Exit Ticket 1st and 3rd • Draw the structure of an atom (label all subatomic particles) • What Changes about Isotopes ? • Protons B) Neutrons C) Electrons • What changes about Ions ? A) Neutrons B) Electrons C) Protons

  17. Exit Ticket 1, 3, and 4 • In general metals (lose/gain) electrons • In general nonmetals (lose/gain) electrons • List the Protons, Neutrons, and Electrons for 41Ca +2 • What is Avogadro’s Constant?
