  3. Background / objectives for this workshop: • Synthesize key observations from aircraft, satellites, .... • - research aircraft: START08, SPURT, NASA, others • - in-service aircraft: MOZAIC, CARIBIC, CONTRAIL • - many satellite and ground-based data sets • Current state of UTLS modeling (process, regional and global models) • Highlight key uncertainties in understanding • Identify specific future research needs (observations and models) • Workshop attended by ~90 people.

  4. Sampling from research aircraft Also in-service aircraft: CARIBIC (170 flights), MOZAIC (>32,000 flights!)

Program: Overview talks, contributed talks and posters Dynamical structure CCMval overview by Hegglin/Gettelman Tropopause Inversion Layer, Double Tropopauses Chemical structure overview by Hoor/Pan tropopause definitions, coordinates for placing parameters Transport and STE overview by Haynes START08, HIPPO Chemistry and microphysics CARIBIC overview by Zahn; CONTRAIL measurements modeling – whole atmosphere models, high vertical resolution, high horizontal resolution models satellite – TES, CALIPSO, ….

  6. Program (cont’d): Overview talks, contributed talks and posters • Long-term variability • MOZAIC overview by Thouret • tropical broadening, tropopause rising • Asian monsoon • Future missions • DC3, PREMIER, MACPEX, PACE, HALO proposed projects • Rapporteur groups led follow-on discussions for each session. • Plans for SPARC Newsletter article, perhaps IGACtivities article, • and likely a summary white paper.
