  4. The education ministers decided in year 2002 to develop an action plan on education for sustainable development in the Baltic Sea region: Baltic 21 Education.

  6. The decision in the UN General Assembly to declare 2005–2014 as a UN Decade of Education for Sustainable Development (DESD) have had an impact on ESD efforts in the Baltic Sea states, in a variety of ways.

  13. Countries need to be in the driver’s seat for ensuring the implementation of the DESD at national level. UNESCO is committed to continue mobilizing stakeholders to extend and deepen their engagement with ESD.

  16. The political will and responsible leadership for tackling the major challenges facing humanity in all our countries can only be created by well-informed and educated public opinion.

  19. Universities, should both compete and cooperate with each other to be among the forerunners as “Universities for a Sustainable Future”.

The Higher Education Act, from 1 February 2006, Swedish universities and university colleges, ‘in their activities, higher education institutions shall promote sustainable development that ensures present and future generations a healthy and good environment, economic and social welfare and justice.’

  21. University management needs to adopt a policy for ESD work at institutions, but also take part in discussions and debates with teachers and researchers on how such a policy might inform the institution’s entire range of activities

  22. Regional Centres of Expertise on Education for Sustainable Development/ UN University in Tokyo (www.ias.unu.edu). There are now more than 70 of these RCEs at present (see http://www.ias.unu.edu).

  23. Ministers of Education, and their Ministries, should develop action plans on ESD, giving government agencies clear roles and responsibilities. All relevant legislation and regulation must reflect the importance of ESD.

  24. Members of Parliament should raise the importance of ESD with their government

  25. Politicians in local and regional government, especially those responsible for school issues, need to be made aware that ESD is an important dimension of quality.

  32. De nordiska länderna måste skapa en ”Nordisk Modell för ESD”. Våra förutsättningar är bättre än i varje annan region. Norden måste bli ett föredöme och en ledande kraft för ESD i EU,UNECE,OECD och UNESCO. TACK!
