An African Adventure. Chapter 1 – The New Neighbours. One sunny Sunday morning, Sam and Emma were looking out of the window. They saw a huge, green van outside the house next door.

Chapter 1 – The New Neighbours One sunny Sunday morning, Sam and Emma were looking out of the window. They saw a huge, green van outside the house next door.
Sam said to Emma, “I wonder why there is a huge, green van outside.” “I think we’re getting new neighbours,” said Emma. Sam, Emma and Bacon, the dog, ran out to meet their new neighbours.
“Hello, my name is Sam. This is my sister, Emma, and our dog, Bacon. We live on the ground floor of the yellow house,” said Sam.
“Hello, nice to meet you all. My name is Andy. We live on the second floor of the pink house,” said Andy happily. “Whose cat is this?” Andy asked Emma and Sam. “I know whose cat it is,” said Emma. “I remember the collar. I think it lives in your house.”
Chapter 2 – The school Project A week later, the three children were walking home from school. “How will we do our reports on wild animals for Miss Lee?” asked Emma.
“Let’s go to the library to find some books,” suggested Sam. “It’s closed,” replied Emma. “I’ve got a good idea,” said Andy.
“I found a computer in the cupboard last Sunday. It might help us. I think it belonged to the man who lived in the house before.” “Oh, I remember that man. He was strange,” whispered Emma.
“He didn’t dress like Dad. He always wore black and orange striped trousers.
His jumper was purple with pink spots. He wore a big, green hat on his curly, orange hair,” said Emma.
“I think the computer belonged to that man. It has a purple cover with pink spots and the keyboard is orange,” said Andy. “Let’s go to Andy’s house and use the computer,” suggested Sam.
Chapter 3 – The Safari Adventure “Our reports are on wild animals. Lets type in WILD ANIMALS and see what information we can find,” suggested Sam.
The children typed in the key words. Suddenly, the room was filled with a bright light. The children and Bacon covered their eyes with their hands. “What’s happening?” asked the children.
“WOW!” exclaimed the children. “Where are we?” “I think we’re in Africa!” said Andy.
“You’re right! Welcome!” said the man in the jeep. “My name is Akimbo. I’ll be your guide. We’ll see lots of different wild animals today. I’ll tell you all about them.”
“Great! We have a school project to do on wild animals,” cheered Sam.
Akimbo said, “You are lucky you can see wild animals. If we do not look after the Earth, there won’t be any animals left. Hold on tight! Here we go!”
“Can you see the orange, brown and white spotted animals with very long necks and legs? They are called giraffes. They are the tallest animals in the world. They live together in families called herds,” said Akimbo.
“Where do they live and what food do they eat?” asked Emma. “They only live in Africa. Their favourite food is leaves. They use their long necks to eat leaves from tall trees.
They can live up to 25 years. When a giraffe is born. It looks the same as its mum and dad. Let’s go and see another animal,” explained Akimbo.
“Hey! I can see some lions. Why do those two lions look different?” asked Emma. “The lion with the most hair is the male. His hair is called a mane.
The lions without a mane are the females. They are called lionesses. The smallest ones are the babies and they are called cubs,” replied Akimbo.
“Do they live in families like the giraffes?” asked Sam. “Yes, but their families are called prides,” said Akimbo. Then Andy asked, “Do they eat leaves, too?”
Akimbo laughed. “No, they eat meat, such as zebras. They can live up to 15 years.” “What can we see next?” asked Emma.
“How about the ostriches?” suggested Akimbo. He pointed to the very big, black and white birds. “WOW!” exclaimed the children.
“It’s a big bird! It’s bigger than a hen,” laughed Emma. “They are the biggest birds in the world and they live in herds too,” said Akimbo.
“Can they fly?” asked Sam. Akimbo smiled. “No, they can’t but they can run very fast.” “Do they lay eggs like hens?” ask Andy.
“Yes, they do, but the eggs are as big as your head,” answered Akimbo. “They eat plants, insects, fruit and nuts. They can live up to 40 years.” Suddenly, there was a loud noise like thunder!
“Look! What’s that?” shouted Sam. “It looks very angry.” “It’s a rhinoceros and it is angry!” yelled Akimbo.
“I think it’s running towards us!” shouted Emma. “Oh, no! What shall we do?” screamed the children.
Chapter 4 – At Home “PHEW! That was fun. What an adventure! Did the computer do this or did we dream it?” asked Sam.
“Hey, it wasn’t just an adventure. We were lucky! We learnt a lot about wild animals. We must look after the Earth so everyone can see wild animals.
We will have lots of information for our reports for Miss Lee. Let’s go and write them,” said Andy.
Lions What they look like Lions have four legs and a tail. Most of them are brown. The males have a mane around their necks. The females are called lionesses. The baby lions are called cubs. When cubs are born. They look the same as their mum.
How long they live Lions can live up to 15 years. Where they live Lions live in prides in Africa. What they eat Lions eat meat by killing animals, such as zebras.
Giraffes What they look like Giraffes have four long legs and a long neck. They have orange, brown and white spots. They are the tallest animals in the world. When baby giraffes are born, they look the same as their mum and dad.
How long they live Giraffes can live up to 25 years. Where they live Giraffes live in Africa where there is grass and trees. They live in herds. What they eat Giraffes eat leaves. They use their long necks to eat leaves from tall trees.
