  2. Space Quest is an Internet adventure • In year 3 the children are expected to cover • Combining text and graphics • Manipulating sound • Introduction to databases • Exploring situations • E-mail

This project will re-visit these units in an interesting and exciting way. • The Space Quest project will cover • E-mails • using the address book • keyboard skills and text editing • inserting pictures • using fonts, changing sizes and styles • manipulating sounds • simulations • editing and interrogating a database

  4. There are 10 messages of which 9 are structured activities. The first one is an introductory activity. Each activity has extension activities to extend the scope of each exercise. The original messages originate from mission.control@blueyonder.co.uk

  5. The Missions

  6. Mission Control calling. Mission Control calling. I have a problem and I need urgent help. We have sent people to a space station on each of the nine planets. All the space stations have a problem. At the moment I don’t know what they are. What do you think could have happened? Do you know the names of the nine planets? I need helpers who can solve problems and have a sense of humour. I will able to tell if you have a sense of humour if you send me your favourite joke. My favourite joke is, “How do elephants get down from trees?” Answer, “Sit on a leaf and wait for autumn.” Send all your jokes to mission.control@blueyonder.co.uk

  7. Mission 1 Mission Control calling. Mission Control calling. I have just received a message from Space Station Pluto. The message says that their computer has stopped working properly. The space bar doesn’t work and they have run out of rubber bands. They have an urgent message. Can you sort it out and tell me what it says? I have attached the message. Send it back to me when you have finished.

  9. Mission 2 Mission Control calling. Mission Control calling. I have received a message from Space Station Jupiter. The station is run by the Dutch but unfortunately their English is not as good as yours. Please will you proof read their message and correct it for them? When you have finished sent it back to me. .

  10. Dad and I where on the way bak from fotball practise. I asked,“Did I pley weel todey dad?” “You did really weel,” he answered. I was pleased becos I’d tried realy hard. When we got hom mum had just finished mendin the car. “I tolde yoo it was the gasket,” she siad. She was really pleased with herself two. We all sat down to tee. Wot a lovely dey!

  11. Mission 3 Mission Control calling. Mission Control calling. Space Station Venus have made contacted to tell me that their computer is faulty. The shift keys have stopped working and so they cannot make capital letters. I am sending you a copy of a message they have sent me.Can you put capital letters in the correct places and send it back to me?

Jack and the Beanstalk jack and his mum didn’t have any money they decided to sell the cow jack took the cow to market he met the magic man on the way the magic man showed jack some magic beans jack swapped the cow for the beans jack’s mum was cross and threw the beans out of the window the next day there was a beanstalk growing outside the window jack decided to climb up the beanstalk at the top he saw a castle in the distance when he opened the door a woman told him to hide because the giant would kill him Can you put the full stops and capital letters in the correct places?

  13. Mission 4 Mission Control calling. Mission Control calling. A message has come in from the British space station on Mars. They are very upset that they haven’t received any letters or parcels for a few weeks. They are very homesick and miss being at home. I think it would be a good idea if you would send them a postcard to cheer them up. I am sending you a blank card so you put some text and a picture onto it.

  14. Mission 5 Mission Control calling. Mission Control calling. There is a serious problem on Space Station Uranus which is manned by the Germans. We have no communications with them. Their radio has stopped working. We are sending a space ship up to them to see what has happened. Can you make some cards with visual words on them so that we can put them at the window for them to see? If you use font, size and style can you make some signs which say what they mean. Here are some words that you can use and I am sure you can think of some more : steps, smaller, larger, rainbow, rotate and bigger. .

  16. Mission 6 Mission Control calling. Mission Control calling. Space Station Saturn has just sent me two messages but unfortunately they have somehow joined together to make one jumbled message. Can you save the jumbled message onto your computer and edit out the unwanted text? Do this by highlighting the unwanted text and then press delete. Save the message and load the jumbled message again and do the same for the other message.

  17. Little Jack Horner, One, two,three,four,five. Sat in a corner, Once I caught a fish alive. Eating his Christmas pie. Six,seven,eight,nine ,ten. He put in his thumb Then I let it go again. And pulled out a plum! Why did you let it go? And said, Because it bit my finger so. “What a good boy am I.” Which finger did it bite ? This little finger on the right.?

  18. Mission 7 Mission Control calling. Mission Control calling. The crew on Space Station Mercury have sent me the front page of their newspaper. They just managed to send it before the power failed in the space station. Their computer has stopped working and they have no lights. They hadn’t time to finish off the newspaper. They managed to put in the text and pictures but as you will see it is in a bit of a mess. Can you sort it out for them and send it onto me?

  19. Mission 8 Mission Control calling. Mission Control calling. The people on Space Station Neptune have some visitors. A film crew from BBC Television have travelled to the space station to record their daily lives.Unfortunately the producer has been taken ill. Can you take over the producer’s job? What you need to do is use Slideshow to make a storyboard sequence of a day in the life of a crew member. You can use the photographs I have sent or you can make your own in Kid Pix. Add sound to each picture to explain what is happening. Good luck and good filming. .

  21. Mission 8 (optional alternative) Mission Control calling.Mission Control calling.The people on Space Station Neptune are having problems with their electrical system. They are without lights and their generator has failed.Use the Crocodile Clips program to design a circuit to light a bulb.

  22. Mission 9 The final mission is for you is to add another astronaut to the database I have about all the people out in the space stations. This needs to be done quite quickly because I need some information urgently. Organisation of the Space Quest project The pack consists of a folder with photocopies of all the activities and assessment sheets Your school’s Email address will be put into a group listing so that you will receive a weekly E-mail from Mission Control during the 3rd term There will be a test transmission during the 2nd term. All this for only £30 ! Re-registration is £20 plus £10 per additional class.
