  2. Social 1900 - King Umberto I assassinated. (July 30) 1904 -  General strike in Italy, with violent incidents in Milan.                        Subsequent elections return a conservative majority. 1908 - Earthquake kills 150,000 in Italy. 1914 - War industries employment increased by 64%. 1924 - Murder of the socialist deputy, Matteotti. 1934 - First meetings between Hitler and Mussolini in Venice.

Political 1911 -  Italy declares war on Turkey and annexes Libya.  1912 - Introduction of new electoral law by Giolitti. 1915 - Italy enters First World war as ally of Britain and France. 1918 - Austro-Italian Front. Domestic upheavals swept from Italian grounds.  1919 - Italy attended the signing of the Versailles. The Versailles Traty ended World War One.               Facist movement started. (November) 1920 - Italy attended the first meeting of the League of Nations. It met for the first time in Geneva, Switzerland.

Political 1921 - In the elections of May 1921, 35 fascists were elected to the Chamber of Deputies.             Italy attended the Washing Conference on November 1921, along with Britain, France, Belgium, the Netherlands, China, Japan, Portugal, and the United Stated. The Conference resulted in a naval armaments treaty that sets a ratio for tonnage of capital ships for Great Britain, the US, Japan, France, and Italy.

  5. Political (Continued) 1922 - Benito Mussolini became Italy's premier on October 30, 1922. He consolidated power by using force and intimidation to eliminate his opponents and create a totalitaran state. Mussolini was sympothetic to Hiltler's desires for global hegemony, and would join Germany as an ally during World War Two.      He had a band of thugs called Black Shirts. They used force to intimidate all opposition to the Italian Fascist Party.     Facist "March on Rome"  1923 - Acerbo electoral law. Italian incasion of Corfu. 1939 - Italian invasion of ALbania. Conclusion of "Pact of Steel" wth Germany 1940 - Italian declaration of war on France and Britain,

Religious 1923 - Gentile's education act - resorted the compulsory religious education that the liberal regime had abolished elementary schools.  1927 - Catholic boy-scout movement.  1929 - Under the Lateran Pacts of 1929 the Vatican City is recognized by Italy as an independent, soverign entity.             Included was the end of Roman Catholicism as Italy's formal state religion.

  7. Intellectual 1917 -                                      “ Art is a lie that makes us realize the truth. ”   — Pablo Picasso Picasso was a very famous artist in Italy of the 20th century. He was known to be the modern artist of the era. Many of his artworks were on his outlook of life. In his artworks he used techniques such as surrealism and dark colors to portray a dark phase that he is going through. 1944- He joined the Communist party.

  8. Intellectual Contiuned... 1947- Picasso is known to be a communist, because of his childhood background. 1950- Picasso received a Stalin Peace Prize. 1953- Picasso painted a picture of the deceased Joseph Stalin. This is a drawing of Stalin by Picasso.

Techological 1914 - The creation of Heavy day bomber called Caproni Ca.1.              And many move versions were created soon after for different reasons. 1917 - Ansaldo A.1 Balilla:fighter aircraft  1918 - Macchi M.12 and M.9:Bomber flying boat.  1919 - Fiar BR was created as a light bomber. Many more military weapons were created.

Economical 1914 - Coal was only 12% of Italy's imports.            Steel producitions were less than a millions tons and coal                   production stood only at 11.5 million tons. 1919 - The Italain national debt was six times its pre-war leavel, and the lire had depreciated to one-third its pre-war value. 1920s - The Great Depression. 1951 - Five million Italian Adults were still illiterate.  1954 - Four million were unemployed. 1960s - Population increased over 9% due to large-scale of migration from the south to industrial cities of the north.
