Literary Terms • Syntax: the arrangement of words in a sentence • Diction: the particular choice of words • Denotation: the literal dictionary meaning of a word • Connotation: the suggested meaning of a word beyond the dictionary definition • Tone: the writer’s attitude towards a subject • Purpose: what the writer wants the reader to understand

Literary Terms • Literal Language: means exactly what it says • Figurative Language: changes the literal meaning for the sake of comparison or emphasis • Alliteration: repetition of beginning sounds • Metaphor: a comparison between two seemingly unlike things • Personification: Givingan object, animal, idea humanlike qualities • Simile: a comparison using the words “like” or “as” • Hyperbole: the use of exaggeration

Literary Terms • Style (poetry): poet’s creative process determined by choices involving diction, figurative language, rhetorical devices, sounds, and rhythmic patterns • Stanza: two or more lines of poetry that form one of the divisions of a poem • Rhyme Scheme: the pattern established by the arrangement of rhymes in a stanza or poem

Literary Terms • Rhetorical Strategies: persuasive strategies • Ethos: the source's credibility, the speaker's/author's authority • Logos: the logic used to support a claim; can also be the facts and statistics used to help support the argument • Pathos: the emotional appeal, appeals to an audience's needs, values, and emotional sensibilities.
