  4. Our Fuel Area Drainage Describe your drainage area • Fuel is designed to follow concrete pad and flow into the drain in the parking lot, which has an oil separator in it that keeps fuel from spilling through to the public drainage system.

  5. Employee Training • Training shall include: • spill response system • good housekeeping • material management practices • individual responsibilities Why am I here?

  6. The ICP Process • Emergency vs. Non-emergency situation • emergency = fire, explosion, release or injury • involves response effort from an outside responder

  7. Fuel Hazards + Prevention • Combustible liquids • Combustible solids (rags + oily debris) • Machine overheats or electrical malfunction • Smoking • Environmental damage

  8. Fuel Island Safety Practices • No smokin’ ! Wear gloves! • Proper dispensing w/the pump  • Read + understand the MSDS  • Available spill equipment  • Report any mishaps!

  11. Fuel Spills and Mishaps • Get help and notify management immediately! • Eliminate any ignition sources • Shut off truck, cell phone (why?) • Clean your spill up promptly • Obtain additional help for the clean up as necessary

  12. The Clean Up Process • Control combustible materials so they do not contribute to the ignition or expansion of a fire • Keep area clear, maintain access to the area in the event there is a need for outside response equipment (spill contractor or fire department)

  13. The Clean Up Process • Spill kit contents: • non-sparking shovel • absorbent pads • sausage boom • bags of “speedy-dri” • Additional pallets of speedy-dri is available from the boiler room. • PPE + SAFETY • safety glasses • gloves • booties

  14. Spill Clean Up Basics • Even a small spill can be dangerous! • Fires + explosions can result • Contamination can spread easily REMEMBER • Only trained workers clean spills • Everyone must understand potential spill hazards and their role in an emergency situation if it occurs!

  15. What about a fire? • Why do we have fire extinguishers inside of our trucks? • Let’s look at this a bit closer!

Fire Response IN THE EVENT OF A FIRE • Notify others immediately! • Call for outside assistance? • Retrieve a fire extinguisher • Assess the situation • Should you use the extinguisher? • If so, continually evaluate the need to evacuate for your personal safety Remember we are not professional firefighters!

  17. Extinguisher Use - “PASS” • Pull the pin • Aim at the base of the fire • Squeeze the trigger • Sweep back and forth in a side-to-side motion ABC
