  1. 2009 WSTA Conference Moses Lake, Washington 19-21 March, 2009 Mary McClellan OSPI Science Director for Teaching and Learning

  2. Goals for Today • Understand how the new standards are organized. • Identify a “Big Idea” and it’s vertical alignment. • Better understand “Cross-cutting Ideas” in light of a lesson and the context in which you work. • OSPI Update on current issues.

  3. New Symbol-New Emphasis

  4. Why new science standards? Goal: Better prepare students to: • Be successful on state science assessments • Participate in post-secondary education • Meet the workforce needs of tomorrow • Become scientifically literate citizens 2007 Legislature passed HB 1906 calling for: • State Board review and OSPI revision of science standards

  5. Characteristics of the Revised Science Standards

  6. EALR 1 Systems EALR 2 Inquiry EALR 3 Application Cross Cutting Big Ideas

  7. Domains of Science: The Big Ideas EALR #4

  8. Cross Cutting Concept Inquiry Domain ECOSYSTEMS Vertical Alignment

  9. The Standards in Your Context • Soil Temperature Investigation-Grade Band 2-3 • Developed by Pacific Educational Institute • Major contributors/authors • Pat Otto of Pacific Educational Institute • Kathryn Show of Seattle Public Schools • Thank you so much for making these materials available to us and to our students.

  10. The Standards in Your Context • Students have: • Collected and observed plants in the environment • Grown Fast Plants inside • Discussed plant needs inside and predicted for outside to include “heat” • Predicted and measured soil temperature in environment

  11. Your Task. • Read the lesson and identify the following: • Places that students can demonstrate the performance expectation(s) for the: • Inquiry (page-Green). • Ecosystem domain of science (page-Pink). • Math Connections (page-Blue).

  12. The Standards in Your Context Discussion question: • How does this lesson most effectively integrate the cross-cutting idea of inquiry with the domain of ecosystems? • How might this play out in your classroom?

  13. Implementation is the Watchword Goal: To build and implement a fully aligned science instructional system to best support student learning. • Science Strategic Plan • Standards Revision • Instructional Materials Review • Graduation Requirements • Assessment • End of Course

  14. Science Strategic Plan Current work Developing work

  15. Standards Revision and Instructional Materials Review • Standards revision at the legislature-April 26 • Instructional Materials Review • Facilitator selected • Review team selected • Rubric development 24-25 Mar. • Core Materials 11-15 May. • SBE Science Panel to review process, rubric and selection

  16. ScienceInstructional Materials ReviewKey Dates • SB 5414 Changes Adopted on March 4th by Legislature • Science Curricula Recommendations • Recommendations of 3 basic curricula to SBE June 30, 2009 • SBE submits comments & recommendations to OSPI August 30, 2009 • Recommendations finalized / OSPI adopts Just after SBE review • Elementary and Middle = 3 recommendations per grade band • High school = 3 recommendations per major domains of science • Earth and Space, Physical Science, Life Sciences

  17. P.D. for Standards Implementation Articulate a common vision for embedded, ongoing, and high quality professional development for all teachers.
