  1. Diffusion of Christianity • Religious hearth is centered in Constantinople • Spread quickly through Northern and Eastern Europe • When Spain invaded Middle and South America, they brought the Catholic faith with them • When citizens living in Europe got tired of the conflict they migrated to North America, bringing the Catholic faith with them

  2. Islam • One of the youngest religions • Traced back to single founder, Muhammad • He spoke through the verses from the Qu’ran (Koran) • The Islam religion was split between the Sunni (the great majority) and Shi’ite Muslims (concentrated in Iran). • Sunni’s believed in the effectiveness of family and community in solving life’s problems • Shi’ites believe the 12 originial imams are without sin and infallible

Diffusion of Islam • Today Islam has more that 1.3 million followers • Fastest growing religion, as it dominates Northern Africa, Southwest Asia, extending to Central Africa, the former Soviet Union and China • It is most strongly represented in India (150 million) and Sub-Saharan Africa (190 million).

  4. Indigenous Religions • Indigenous are very local in slope, they practice having a reverence in nature and are passed down through family units and groups. • They can also be classified as people who are having to go through the same pressures that are inflicted on them by the major religions, and still have been able to keep their religion alive.

  5. Shamanist • This is a faith that is adapted by a community and were the followers are leaded through life by a shaman (religious leader, teacher, healer or visionary). • Very traditional religion

  6. The Rise of Secularism • Hundreds of millions of people are not counted in the figure because they practice traditional religions. • Another factor that has to be presented in counting religions, are those millions of people who do not practice a religion at all. • Therefore the rise of Secularism can be seen as an indifference or rejection to the organized religious affiliations and ideas.

  7. Kyoto, Japan • (Shinto Shrine) Both Buddhism and Shintoism make their mark on the cultural landscape with this building.

  8. Borobudur, India • These sculptures were built in 800 CE when Buddhism was spreading rapidly throughout Southeast Asia

  9. Prague, Czech Republic • A historical Jewish neighborhood, filled with cemeteries honoring the dead and synagogues.

  10. Kota Kinabalu, Malaysia • This structure of the Sabah State Mosque creates a very strong cultural imprint for the Muslims.

  11. Paris, France • This large mosque represents the Islamic migration to France many years previously.

  12. The Roman Empire • The Roman Empire divided into east (mainly focused on Constantinople) and west (focused on Rome).
