Original Thesis Statement • The Manifest destiny philosophy has created a particular mind set within America society that has not been corrected, and continues to have long lasting repercussions on the Latino community in regards to education equality, stigmatization and economic achievement. Latinos identity has now shifted to a new visual presence. For this reason, it appears as if the manifest destiny philosophy is more unpretentious however, discrimination, racism, and nativism continue to persist today due to its existence in an altered form.

  3. Overall Argument • The Manifest destiny philosophy and continues to have long lasting repercussions on the Latino community in regards to education equality, stigmatization and economic achievement.

  4. Evidence Used to Support Thesis • Mendez v. Westminister school District. The highly forgotten court case that set the stage for the Supreme Court case Brown v Board of education. Mendez v. Westminister school District highlights the struggle for educational equality that existed in the early 1900’s (Aguirre 323).

  5. Evidence Used to Support Thesis Continued • Tax Facts: Each school district receives taxes based on the community that it is located in. Although the poorest communities often pay the most property taxes, those communities still generate fewer dollars that per-pupil expenditure (Tedin 629).

  6. Evidence Used to Support Thesis Continued • Education Facts: Twenty six percent of Latinos do not complete High School and thirty one percent of Latino boys leave high school prior to obtaining a high school diploma (Heidenreich 134).

  7. Evidence Used to Support Thesis Continued • Economic Statistic: In the 1920’s the railroad industry salaries were 35-39 cents an hour, the packing house worker made 45-47 cents an hour, and a steel factory worker made 45-50 cent an hour (Acuna 192).

  8. Evidence Used to Support Thesis Continued • Socioeconomic Disparity: There is a “79 percent or $1,262 of the earnings differences between the dark phenotypic group and other Mexican Americans” compared to whites (Darity 72).

  9. Evidence Used to Support Thesis Continued • Discrimination and Racism :1990 Census found that black Hispanics suffer close to ten times the proportionate income loss due to differential treatment of given characteristics than white Hispanics” (Darity 72).

  10. Evidence Used to Support Thesis Continued • Stigmatization and Incarceration: “Latino youth are two times more likely than whites to be sentenced to prison” and the recidivism rate for minority adult offenders is more than fifty percent (Marable 59).

  11. Overall Implications • The literal expansion part of manifest destiny has arguably simmered as Latinos are taking power positions such as Sonia Sotomayor the first Latino Court Justice was appointed in 2009. , however manifest destiny overall exists in an altered form that inhibits the Latino community from attaining complete equality. The evidence provided supports the thesis by showing how education, stigmatization exist and the Latino communities economic is disabled due to discrimination racism and the manifest destiny mindset.
