  1. Spectrometer Solenoid ReportandCoupling Coil Update Michael S. Zisman MICE Operations Manager Center for Beam Physics Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory MICO Meeting March 16, 2009

  2. Status (1) • Making slow but steady progress on first Spectrometer Solenoid (“Magnet 2”) • fabrication work on turret completed • welding radiation shield and LN2 reservoir connections done • wrapping in MLI • welding outer vacuum covers • already done • cold mass leak checked • condenser sleeves and magnet leads completed • to do • complete instrumentation feedthroughs • complete fill/vent connections • add weld preps to end plates (under way; weld rings already in place in vacuum vessel) Solenoid Report-Zisman

  3. Status (2) • Expect final assembly of radiation shield and vacuum vessel completed this week • leak check next week (week of March 23) • first cool-down expected week of March 30 • keep your fingers crossed! • Other news • tried tracker go-no-go gauge in Magnet 1 (the earlier one) • bore was out of magnet but still welded to patch panel and plate • fit fine! (see photo later) • test will be repeated in Magnet 2 this week after warm bore installed Solenoid Report-Zisman

  4. Magnet turret inner components wrapped in MLI

  5. Magnet power leads at top of turret

  6. Weld ring in place for vacuum vessel end plate (patch panel end)

  7. Welding of radiation shield and LN2 reservoir connections

  8. Tracker ‘go-no go’ gage in warm bore of Magnet #1

  9. Coupling Coil Update • Visited likely vendor for magnet fabrication • Qihuan Mechanical and Electronic Engineering Corporation (QMEEC) • located in Beijing • Derun Li, Steve Virostek, MZ, Li Wang and ShiXian Zheng were there • Company statistics • 29 employees; 2200 m2 floor space • 20 years experience with superconducting magnets • MRI magnets • BEPC-II detector magnet (3 m diameter, 4 m long) • completing MRI magnet of their own design now (see photos) • Impressions • quite favorable; they are interested and knowledgeable • but, we still want Li Wang to manage the work! Solenoid Report-Zisman

  10. Coil winding form parts at QMEEC ready for welding

  11. High bay at QMEEC showing magnet assembly area

  12. Coil array for 1.5T MRI magnet nearing completion at QMEEC

  13. Iron vacuum vessel for 1.5T MRI

  14. Coil winding facility at QMEEC

  15. Aluminum weld samples for coupling coil cooling lines and cold mass cover plates

  16. Test Coil at ICST • Close to being able to test the “long coil” in Harbin Solenoid Report-Zisman
