  1. MICE News 9 March 2005 A. Funding and status we did not succeed in preparing a good enough I3 proposal for EU on neutrinos. Problems were not associated with the parts concerning MICE, which were or would have been ready but with detectors and access to CERN or Gran Sasso. Learned a lot, will now concentrate on preparing a powerful bid for a Neutrino Factory Design Study. (First prestudy of which was requested by John Wood, RAL CEO to Ken Long) 2. MICE will be a recognized CERN experiment. This gives access to CERN and to some important practicalities: use of team accounts, some office space 3. we have un-official news that the MICE-UK project has been approved by PPARC NSRC, and finally CCLRC! Congratulations! Official statement will be made by the Minister of Sciences (Lord Sainsbury) in a few weeks. Do not talk to your favorite tabloid about ‘approval of mice by UK’ until then, please.

  2. "We have just heard that the last formal barrier to MICE approval in the UK and at the Rutherford Laboratory has been passed. We expect the formal announcement from the Minister in the next two to three weeks." Ken also added: "Because of the sensitive issue of "protocol", it would be very embarrassing if there was any public announcement before the Ministerial statement."

  3. most relevant conclusions of executive board meeting 13-february 2005 at Berkeley • DAQ controls and monitoring working group. • Edda would be the WBS responsible for DAQ • Makoto will be reponsible for tracker DAQ • Brian Martlew from Darsbury will be responsible for the controls and interlocks • [meanwhile Edda has a job at CERN and AB is looking for a replacement!] • 2.it was re-stated that the completion of TPG R&D remains an integral part • of the MICE project. • 3. Analysis working group and task. • we are preparing the job description of an analysis task leader. • 4. Launch « readiness » audits by D&S group. • --> No major problems foreseen. • First step is to ensure that the task leaders that were absent at the CM are really on board. • 5. responsibility of tracker-RF shield will be the responsibility of the tracker module • 6. PID shielding plates (also in step 2) will be part of the tracker module. • They will be assembled together with the spectrometer solenoid.

  4. 7. the effect of beam scraping on shielding plate on the emittance measurements will be studied • (actions Vittorio Yagmur, Malcolm) to finalize the hole in this plate. • 8. Diffuser task is: • -- define specs: what (how many thicknesses) and where (optics problem) • -- design system with less than 30 minutes changeover time. • This again is a responsibility of the tracker module. • An ad hoc working group (Kevin Tilley, Chris Rogers, et al) will work it out. • 9. TOF is now urgent • Alain will contact Bonesini to begin purchases with aim to participate in the KEK beam test in october 2005 (see next VC) [funds requested at Geneva to begin with a small TOF0 and TOF1 prototype] • 10. policy for protection and blessing of MICE related information. • Long and Blondel will come up with a proposal by 15 March • 11. relation with Manx. --> Dan Kaplan will invite Rol Johnson et al to give a presentation • to the next MICE CM in Frascati • 12. next meeting it was suggested to get together one week after the VC so that the TB can • happen in between (wednesday-monday-friday) • next EB meeting will be on thursday 17 March 21:00 GMT (18 March 6:00 in Japan) • to try the winter time option.

  5. First beam 1st April 2007 **** 365*2 +22= 752 days to data taking !!!
