  1. Presents 2005 IMTC Forum

  2. IMS in Future networks May 11th, 2005 Dr Subrata De Vodafone Group Technology IMTC Forum Conference, Eibsee, Germany on The Future of Next Generation Networks: Convergence of VoIP, Videoconferencing and Mobile

  3. Introduction Source: Probe Group LLC • “Converged voice and data services are the key to revenue growth” • Yankee Group, October 2003 • Service Providers grappling with cost of today’s multiple parallel networks • voice, data, wireless, private ... • Universal agreement that voice packetization will help to achieve convergence • cost efficiency, • service innovation The Need for Top Line Growth Via New Services is the Key Convergence Driver IMTC Forum – May 2005 – Eibsee, Germany

  4. Cool Services MMS, WAP Instant Messaging Push to Talk Mobile Media CS Telephony + Multimedia IP based Person-2-Person Multimedia Today Near Term Mid Term Applications/service control Always Best Connected Voice & SMS IP enabled Installed base Transport IP connectivity over any access! Today Near Term Mid Term Developing mobile VoIP capabilities CS voice + PS Multimedia Seamless Cellular-W-LAN access GSM / WCDMA networks Efficient Networks Towards converged services IMTC Forum – May 2005 – Eibsee, Germany

  5. IP Multimedia Core SIP SIP IMSPerson to Person IP Connection IP Multimedia Core finds the other terminal and connects the terminals with IP Circuit-switched network (2G or 3G) Find and connect Packet-switched network (GPRS or 3G) Any IP connection (e.g. GPRS, EDGE, WCDMA, WLAN) IP-based services possible between terminals! IMTC Forum – May 2005 – Eibsee, Germany

  6. What new Services does IMS offer? • Person to Person Multimedia Services • Exchange of any file type - data, video, voice • New Services • Rich Voice services e.g. See What I See • Push-to-Talk & Push-to-See • Media / application sharing • Fully Integrated Messaging Services • Person-to-person gaming • …and any of these with group connectivity & presence information • and unlimited number of Services we have not considered yet • Service Integration • IMS allows all voice & data services to be integrated into a single proposition – allowing a variety of user experiences IMTC Forum – May 2005 – Eibsee, Germany

  7. Strategic Drivers for IMS • Enables better Value Chain positioning • Provides management of the Service Plane, making the network Service aware • Operators can become a full value added Service Provider • Key Enabler for the IP Commercial models • Introduces Calling party pays (CPP) into IP based Services • Enriches the On-Net user experience • Service charging by event / media types along with managed QoS • Enabler for service-aware IP Interconnect between operators (GSMA) • Only solution today for inter-operator P2P and Rich Call exchange, with event / media types based charging • Allows interworking with ISPs for mobilising existing services based on standardised protocol (SIP) • Potential Enabler for future IP based messaging • Delivers standardised SIP-based Messaging Services • Enables paid interoperability with other players (fixed and mobile) • Improves User Experience based on fully integrated Messaging Services IMTC Forum – May 2005 – Eibsee, Germany

  8. P2P Communication €24.8 bn Western Europe Forecast Mobile Service Revenues 2003 - 07 IMS includes major capabilities to support innovative Applications IMS is very well positioned to enhance P2P Communication services ! Info-Entertainment €11.2 b M-commerce €0.8 b Enterprise €3.2 b (Source: The Yankee Group, 2002) IMS supported Capability Partially IMS supported Capability IMTC Forum – May 2005 – Eibsee, Germany

  9. IMS Market Drivers • P2P Communication covers the major part of Service Revenues • IMS enables IP based P2P Communications! • IMS can be the key enabler for future mobile internet Services With: • Richer Communication – IMS supports new Rich Call type Services • Reliable – Standardised; Telco grade equipment • Easy to use – IMS improves User Experience based on fully integrated Services • Full connectivity – interconnection of IP service providers and their communities • Enhances Enterprise, SME and Corporate propositions • Lowers potentially the threshold cost margin for new innovative services • Reduced Break Even point allows to develop also ‘Niche Market’ Services IMTC Forum – May 2005 – Eibsee, Germany

  10. IMS enabling inter-working of new IP services • Interoperability across networks and devices is essential • Consumers want ubiquitous services (e.g. telephony) not “islands”. • Successful services require network effects (Metcalfe’s law). • IP service inter-working is a key driver for service take-up and commercial success. • GSMA is conducting trials of inter-working of SIP/IMS based services • Goal: Promote interoperability of SIP/IMS-based services across providers from “day one” of commercial service. • Stakeholders: 13 companies incl. Mobile Operators (service providers), GRX Carriers (managed inter-operator backbone), IMS vendors (platform and terminal suppliers). • Achievements communicated in Cannes 2005: First tests have proven successful SIP service inter-working using real phones, IMS infrastructures of 3 vendors involved inter-working well, GRX carriers proven beneficial in enabling practical inter-working. • Plans: Two more test campaigns scheduled to run in May 2005, as more companies join. Asian operators teaming up for SIP/IMS test campaigns towards June 2005. PoC test campaign planned in 4 Q 2005. IMTC Forum – May 2005 – Eibsee, Germany

  11. IMS Technical Drivers • Common layer for the Convergence of Global Services • Re-use of charging, authentication and interconnection for all Services • Allows Services to be ‘Developed once, Deployed many times’ • IMS enables the horizontal layer approach • Cost efficiency analysis indicates CAPEX & OPEX savings per service deployment • Shorter Time-to-Market • Fast and reliable service creation re-using functionalities and enablers • And more flexibility for integration of new 3rd party services • Standardised architecture developed by 3GPP • Based on IETF (SIP) & Aligned with OMA • Eases the Networks, Services & Terminals Interoperability • Supports Fixed-Mobile Convergence to facilitate a single customer touch point IMTC Forum – May 2005 – Eibsee, Germany

  12. Service (creation level ) Service Enabler PTT Service Service Control Presence IM PoC GLM Gaming IMS Core IMS Charging Control Plane Go PS Domain GPRS UMTS User Plane Policy Control Point Integrated charging Service bearer correlation QoS Towards P2P services • Strategic model for P2P service creation based on IMS enhanced core • - New layered model allows to use the same enablers more than once • - Control and User plane are separated • Quality of service for the IP user plane controlled by IMS core network IMTC Forum – May 2005 – Eibsee, Germany

  13. IP Communication Convergence RNC BSC Fixed / Wireline Mobile MSC server ecosystem CS Soft switch ecosystem PSTN WCDMA Circuit Domain SoftswitchMedia Gateways Access Gateways MSC Server HLR MGW GSM MSS UNC Operator IP Communication Core/Center Unlicensed access TelCo AppSE IP Centrex 3rd Party Service Provider IP PBX PoC CPS IMR xDSL Enterprise Packet Domain IMS Core Application Servers WLAN 3G Public Hot Spot WLAN Home GPRS/EDGE IMS ecosystem Internet & Intranet ecosystem IMTC Forum – May 2005 – Eibsee, Germany

  14. Conclusion • Services will be tailored to the user and terminal they use, not the network they are on • Packet technology is enabling convergence within and across wireless, wireline and Enterprise networks • Network and service convergence: - Provides a joined-up service meeting customer demand and expectations - Eliminates many of the costs associated with disparate and labour intensive operations • Control your IP network by yourself • Maximise revenue opportunities with the All IP ecosystem IP Multimedia subsystem (IMS) is the way forward IMTC Forum – May 2005 – Eibsee, Germany
