  1. Presents IMTC Forum 2004

  2. Mobile Multimedia and Evolution of 3GPP Packet Switched Streaming Service (PSS) Presented by Mr. Emre B. Aksu Nokia Corporation

  3. Contents • What is Mobile Multimedia? • Elements of Mobile Multimedia • Effect of Technological Convergence • The Role of Standards • Interoperability • Focus: 3GPP PSS • Evolution of PSS from Release 4 to Release 6 • Conclusion IMTC Forum – May 2004 – San Jose, California

  4. What is Mobile Multimedia? • Creating, sharing, discovering and consuming multimedia content anytime and anywhere in a secure way. • Communicating via multimedia means in either one-to-one, one-to-many or many-to-many fashion anytime and anywhere in a secure way. IMTC Forum – May 2004 – San Jose, California

  5. …Mobility… content network service device application • Media On-Demand • Multicasting • Broadcasting • IM & Presence • IMS (e.g. PoC, SIP) • MMS • SMS • VoIP • Media Portals • Mobile Games • Visual Radio • … • Media Player App. • Streaming Server App. • SIP Clients / Servers • Content Authoring Tools • Instant Messaging App. • Rich Call • Video Telephony • Media Recorder • Development Tools • … • Mobile Phones • Imaging Devices • PDAs • Laptops • Recorders • Media storage & • playback devices • Media server & • gateway equipment • … • 2G • 2.5G • 3G • WLAN • LAN • IP based NWs • … Core Elements of Mobile Multimedia • -static (e.g. jpg, .txt) • -pre-stored dynamic • (3gp,mp4, etc.) • live • … IMTC Forum – May 2004 – San Jose, California

  6. Technological Elements of Mobile Multimedia • Standards-Centric View: • System Architectures (end-to-end service definitions, system-level interface definitions, functional descriptions, etc.) • Protocols (data transport, signalling and control) • Codecs (audio and visual) • Formats (containers, message formats, file formats, etc.) IMTC Forum – May 2004 – San Jose, California

  7. Effect of Technological Convergence • Digital Convergence widens the scope of ”media” and the way it is accessed. • Convergence blurs the boundaries and enables new technological synergies. • e.g. Mobility + Broadcasting : DVB-H (“TV in your pocket”) • Convergence brings tighter interoperability requirements. • Divergence in technological solutions is the last thing desired in such a convergent environment. IMTC Forum – May 2004 – San Jose, California

  8. The Role of Standards • Standards enable the technologicalecosystems to exist with many stakeholders. • Openness gives way to mass deployment and at the same time enable interoperability. • Standards povide a natural evolution path for technologies, while enabling backward compatibility when necessary. IMTC Forum – May 2004 – San Jose, California

  9. Interoperability • Interoperability is a natural requirement of standards. • It is an implementation-centric issue with essential feedback on the standard (e.g. as change requests). • Note: High-level of interoperability does NOT necessarily mean high-level of standards compliance! Creation of big interoperable ”islands” must be avoided. This can be achieved by having a close relationship with the standardization bodies! • e.g. IMTC PSS-AG: LSs with 3GPP and 3GPP2 IMTC Forum – May 2004 – San Jose, California

  10. FOCUS: 3GPP Packet Switched Streaming Service • Standardized by 3GPP (mainly by SA WG4) • Main Specs: 26.233 (General Description), 26.234 (Protocols and Codecs), 26.244 (3GP File Format) • Release History: Release 4 (2001), Release 5 (2002) and Release 6 (2004) • 3GPP PSS evolved from being a simple streaming service (Rel.4) to a more advanced one (Rel.6), with backwards compatibility in mind. • 3GPP and 3GPP2 work closely to align the two packet switched streaming services from especially protocols and file format perspective. IMTC Forum – May 2004 – San Jose, California

  11. 3GPP Packet Switched Streaming Service Network elements of 3GPP PSS System IMTC Forum – May 2004 – San Jose, California

  12. Evolution of 3GPP PSS IMTC Forum – May 2004 – San Jose, California

  13. Main drivers of this evolution • New technologies (e.g. H.264 (AVC), MBMS) • Technological alignment with other Standardization Bodies (e.g. IETF, MPEG, etc.) • Increase in bandwidth (new codecs, new profiles and levels) • Content & Service Providers’ Needs • Media alternatives for different network access scenarios (3GP Server Profile) • Adaptation to different network characteristics (3GPP Rate Adaptation) • Digital Rights Management (DRM in File Format & transport) • Need for statistical information (QoE Protocol) • User needs (e.g. clip assets information in 3GP file and in SDP) IMTC Forum – May 2004 – San Jose, California

  14. Conclusion • We’re living in a digitally convergent environment and mobile multimedia is very much affected by this. • Standards provide the core means to sustain the technological ecosystem. • Interoperability is the natural requirement of such ecosystems. • The progress of 3GPP PSS is a good example of Mobile Multimedia Evolution driven by the industry and standardization bodies together. IMTC Forum – May 2004 – San Jose, California
