  1. Pre-weighed crucible Sample Sample + + Record weight of digested and dried filter bag with sample enclosed Ashing Procedure Record weight of a clean crucible or other suitable vessel for ashing process ( ) + Insert filter bag/sample into crucible and ash

  2. Ashing Procedure - Sample Crucible weight = 25.5138 grams Sample + Digested Filter bag/sample weight = ..5193 ( ) Sample + + Combined weight = 26.0331 grams Pre-weighed crucible

  3. Pre-weighed crucible Ashing Procedure - Sample After Ashing (550°- 600°C) Re-weigh crucible and contents and record weight ( ) + Combined weight after ashing = 25.5161 grams Remaining ash (inorganic matter)

  4. Pre-ignition Combined weight of crucible and filter bag/sample = 26.0331 grams Minus Combined weight after ashing = 25.5161grams Loss of weight after ignition = 0.5170 grams (organic matter) Ashing Procedure - Sample Determining loss in weight after ignition (Ashing)

  5. (0.5170 - (.4889 x 0.9992)) x 100 1.0019 CF = 2.844595 Ashing Procedure - Sample Using the ashing results in a formula Example given - CF (W4-(W1 x C2)) x 100 W2 x DM W1 = Original bag weight W2 = Sample Weight W3 = Weight after extraction W4 = Weight of Organic Matter (Loss of weight on ignition of bag & fiber residue) C1 = Blank Bag Correction (final oven-dried weight/original bag weight) C2 = Ash corrected blank bag (Loss of weight on ignition of bag/original blank bag) SEEEXAMPLE NEXT PAGE DM = Dry Matter value as decimal

  6. Ashing Procedure - SampleDetermining C2 Value • Weight of ashing vessel + weight of blank bag AFTER extraction • Subtract weight of ashing vessel AFTER ashing • Divide result by original weight of bag after extraction • E.g. (Crucible) 26.0192 +.5021 = 26.5213 After Ash weight - 26.0196 0.5017/0.5021 = 0.9992
