Total Current Production: 1.4 Crores Metric Ton • Second largest industry in the world (after iron and Steel) • 90% of total production is in Asia Continent • (Thailand 34%, Indonesia 26%, Vietnam 8%, China 7%, India 7%, Malaysia 7%) • Useful in making minimum of 400 medical and health equipment and minimum of 50,000 other items. • 70% of total rubber is used for manufacturing tyre.(exists 450 tyre manufacturers in the world) & 30% in the non-tyre sector. Cultivation started in Jhapa in 2046 BS. • Current Cultivation area is around 1,000 ha. • Current annual production is 450 MT. • Current Annual Import of Rubber and related products is around NPR 7 Arab. • Prospect Places for cultivation: Jhapa, Morang, Sunsari, Lower belt of Ilam and Chure Hill. • Other potential districts are Udayapur, Saptari, Makawanpur, Chitawan, Nawalparasi and Lower belt of Gorkha, Lamjung and Tanahu • Prospect Land Area: Around 50,000 ha. (as per former agricultural minister Radhakrishna Mainali). Rubber in Nepal

Where to cultivate Natural Rubber (Heveabrasiliensis) ?? • Hevea is the Native of Brazil in South America with humid topographical climate. • Nepal is in 44th position in Rubber World. • Well Distributed rainfall (2000-3000mm) • High Relative Humidity (>80%) • Temperature 10-40°C (Average of 20-34°C) • Altitude 500 Meter above sea level.(Selected variety can be grown up to 900 Meter. ) • Well drained soil having PH: 4.5 to 6.5 (sandy loam, loam and silt loam etc.)

Rubber & it’s Cultivation • Yield starts from 6th year of planting and lasts for 27 years. • Intercropping can be done so as to double the productivity. • Per Hectare production of dry rubber is 1,800 Kg per year and selling price per Kg is about 200-225 NPR (Price is in increasing trend –WB) • The demand of Rubber and rubber related items by 2020 AD is expected to be 20,000 MT. • Direct and Indirect Employment Generation is Supposed to be 3,50,000 people for 50,000 hectare.

  6. Advantages of Rubber • Rubber acts as a major industrial input (Raw Material). • Import Substitution and reduce the trade deficit. • Massive Employment Generation. (Farm to various industries ) • Livelihood Improvement and economic uplifting. • Technology Transfer • Restoring ecological balance by afforestation and reforestation. • Rubber Plantation contribute to yield honey, timber, firewood, oil and oil cakes as by-products. • Increases Govt. revenue by industrialization. • Province 1 can supply raw material to other provinces and contributes for economic stability. • Province 1 can be renowned as ‘Rubber Capital’.

Future Strategies & Way Forward • Specific Land Identification • Institutionalizing the rubber sector. • Joint collaboration of Nepal Govt., Nepalese Private Sector and International bodies working in rubber sector (PPP). • Massive Cultivation with Strategic Planning (Short term and long term). • Subsidizing rubber cropping by Nepal Govt. as like in other sector.

  8. Decision of Rubber Dev. Committee in 2054 Ashadh 19 Regarding Transformation of Ownership from Ministry of Forest to Ministry of Agriculture.
