  3. SIDE OUT - POINT • Every time the ball is served a point is awarded to one team. • If the serving team makes a mistake, it is called a side out and the other team gets a point and gets to serve. • If the receiving team makes a mistake, the serving team gets a point and continues serving.

  4. BOUNDARIES • At St. Theresa’s the Red line is the boundary line. • If the ball lands on the line it is good. • A ball is out of bounds when it: Lands outside of the red line Touches ceiling on 3rd hit or touches ceiling and goes over net. Touches antennas or outside of antennas

  5. SERVING • At St. Theresa’s you may take one step over the end line. At most schools if you step over the end line it is called a foot fault and the other team gets a point and you lose the serve. • The ball may hit the net on the serve if it goes over and lands in bounds • You have 5 seconds to serve after the official blows the whistle. In PE you must say the score before your serve. • You may have only 1 re-serve during your term of service. A reserve is when you toss the ball and let it drop or catch it. A time out may not be called during a re-serve. • You keep serving until the ball does not go over the net on the serve or a side out occurs.

  6. BLOCKING / SPIKING • A back row player may not block the ball or spike the ball • A ball may be blocked on the opposite side of the net on the serve. • You may block on the opposite side of the net when the other team has completed its attack.

  7. CONTACTING THE BALL • You may hit the ball 1, 2, or 3 times before it must cross the net. • If 2 players hit the ball at the same time it is considered 1 hit. • A player may not hit the ball 2 times in a row. They may be the 1st and 3rd hit.

  8. NET / CENTER LINE • A player may not touch the net with his body. It is not a foul if your hair touches the net, or if the force of the ball pushes the net into a player • You may play the ball after it hits the net, unless there have already been 3 hits. • A player may step ON, but not OVER the center line.

  9. GAMES / MATCHES • There are three games in a match. If you win the first two, you do not have to play the 3rd game. • The first two game consists of 25 points. The third game goes to 15 points. You must win by two points • Each team gets 2 time outs per game.

  10. Line Judges • There can be 2 or 4 line judges • Line judges let the official know: 1. If the ball is in (hands down) or out of bounds (hands up) 2. If a player touched a ball that went out of bounds (slide fingers of one hand on palm of opposite hand) 3. If the serve touched the end line on the serve (foot fault) (Point down to line and move hand back and forth)
