  2. Thesis • We will explore the response by individuals to the feeling of being a cultural outsider and we will attempt to apply our conclusions to our own lives.

  3. Works That We Explore • “Rodeo” by Jane Martin • “Ella, in a square apron along highway 80” by Judy Grahn • “Richard Cory” by Edwin Arlington Robinson • “Civil Disobedience” by Henry David Thoreau

  4. “Rodeo” • Big Eight was seen as an outcast in our society • But she was seen as normal in her community • Hardworking and uneducated woman • Raised around men and the rodeo

  5. “Rodeo” • Made into an outcast in her own community • Big businesses bought out and changed their rodeo • The banker told her she wasn’t suitable for the rodeo, said they were looking for a different type.

  6. “Ella, in a square apron along highway 80” • She’s independent and strong because she grew up a café waitress • Waiting on rude truck drivers passing through who commented on her and made vulgar gestures

  7. “Ella, in a square apron along highway 80” • She responded to being a cultural outsider well • She learned to adapt to her surroundings and take care of herself and her child at the best she could • Ella uses her mind and words to not let others belittle her or disrespect her.

  8. “Richard Cory” • He was an unusual outsider • He was admired by everyone that saw him: “In fine, we thought he was everything” • He had great wealth but it brought him no happiness

  9. “Richard Cory” • Instead of facing his internal pain, he separated himself from society and hid behind a false image • He felt like an outsider but he did not let anyone see this

  10. “Richard Cory” • He responded to his internal pain and loneliness by putting a bullet through his head • We should not project a false image and we should be honest with others about our sense of being an outcast

  11. “Civil Disobedience” • He argued that • “The mass of men serve the state thus, not as men mainly, but as machines, with their bodies” • “Unjust laws exist: Shall we be content to obey them or shall we endeavor to amend them and obey them until we have succeeded or shall we transgress them at once?”

  12. “Civil Disobedience” • Claim of policy • “Under a government which imprison any unjustly, the true place of a just man is also prison.”

  13. “Civil Disobedience” • Personal experience • “Pay it or be locked up in the jail.” • “I have paid no poll tax for 6 years. I was put into jail once for this account.”

  14. Conclusion • Each person has to deal with being a cultural outsider in some way • Some of us respond to this feeling in a positive way and some of us result to a negative response • When do you feel like a cultural outsider and how do you handle it?
