  1. Lesson 46 – Pictorial Sequence Catalina Shen Smith

  2. Mask Tutorial • This pictorial sequence shows how to make a mask. • The sewing level recommended is advanced beginner.

  3. You will need: • Mask pattern* • Mask fabric (elephant print) • Lining fabric (cream muslin) • Elastic** • Thread to match fabric • Scissors • Pins • Bodkin (not pictured) • Sewing machine *Pattern used from @yonopo on Instagram **Elastic used is from the Gypsy Quilter (www.gypsyquilter.com)

  4. Place 2 pieces of mask fabric (print) together, right side to right side, and pin Front pattern piece to the layered print fabric. Place 2 pieces of lining fabric (cream solid) together, right side to right side, and pin Back pattern piece to the layered lining fabric. Cut fabric to pattern pieces.

  5. Sew the two print front pieces right side to right side using a 3/8” seam allowance. Do the same with the 2 lining fabric pieces.

  6. Fold the sides of the lining fabric about 3/8” towards the wrong side and fold 3/8” again. Sew in place. Pin the front and lining mask pieces together right side to right side and sew 3/8” along both the top edge and bottom edge. Turn mask inside out.

  7. Top stitch 1/8” along the top and bottom edges using matching thread.

  8. To create a small sleeve down the side of the mask for elastic, fold the edges of print fabric over two times and sew down in place.

  9. Using the bodkin, pull one end of the elastic through the small sleeve along edge of mask. Tie the two ends of the elastic together, making sure it is tight and secure. Tuck the tied portion of the elastic into the sleeve. Adjust elastic and…

  10. VOILA! You have a mask!
