Tour Operators’ Initiative (TOI) "We are committed to developing, operating and marketing tourism in a sustainable manner; that is, all forms of tourism which make a positive contribution to the natural and cultural environment, which generate benefits for the host communities, and which do not put at risk the future livelihood of local people"(Article 1.3 of the Statement of Commitment)

Work in Destinations • Implementation of the Cooperation Agreement with WWF • Follow-up on the Side pilot project • Potential cooperation with Rainforest Alliance • Extension of the cooperation with the United Nations • Provide consultancies upon request to facilitate the implementation of sustainable tourism in destinations not necessarily TOI projects

International Support and Recognition 1 October 2007: TOI applies to become UNWTO Affiliate Member 17-18 October 2007: Board members meet with strategic partners in New York (USTOA; UNICEF; UN Global Compact; Programme Coordination, Major Groups and Partnerships Branch and Small Island Developing States Unit - Division for Sustainable Development; UN Fund for International Partnerships)

  8. USTOA -Presentation of the TOI to USTOA members (beginning of 2008) • UNICEF -Evaluation of UNICEF projects in 5-6 countries to identify possible areas of cooperation. Information on the TOI was sent to the UNICEF office in Geneva (in contact with the National Committees) • UN Global Compact -Possible areas of cooperation: Human Rights Initiative; Policy Dialogue; GC Tourism Alliance • Programme Coordination, Major Groups and Partnerships Branch (Division for SD) - Participation in Partnerships Fair; show case on the CSD web-site; tourism included in the Thematic Cluster 2012-2013 • Small Island Developing States Unit (Division for SD) - Participation in a Conference on Climate Change, proposed by the Japanese private sector • UNFIP - Support to set up international partnerships (biodiversity conservation and supply chain management) and possible engagement in strategic planning and policy dialogue
