  2. How to use the Wireless • Required Hardware • 802.11 wireless capable laptop or PCMCIA card for wireless • Required Software • Download and configure the Virtual Private Network (VPN) software • Penn State Access Account • Only Penn State Access Account holders can log into the secure network

  3. Start your Connection • Power up your laptop • Launch your VPN client software • Log in with Penn State Access Account • Use the wireless network for your tasks • SecureNET Access Points are labeled pennstate • Disconnect the VPN client when you are done

  4. Wireless Speeds • IEEE 802.11a, 802.11b and 802.11g are used on the SecureNET • 802.11 is the network standard for wireless • b specification supports a speed of up to 11Mbps • a and g specification supports speeds up to 54 Mbps • Speed can fluctuate significantly depending on the number of simultaneous users and signal strength

  5. Signal Strength • May extend to adjacent outside areas • Solid objects can dampen the signal • building’s walls, ceilings, metal, furniture, and even people • Weak signal strength? • Moving your laptop a few feet may improve your reception • Closer you are to an access point, the better your signal

  6. Wireless is NOT a Substitute • For the higher-speed wired connections • Should not be used for high-performance computing • Should not be used for bandwidth intensive multi-media applications

  7. Operating Limitations of ITS Wireless • No Access to Network Resources • Network Printers (HHDev or any other network) • Shared Network Drives (HHDev or any other network) • No centrally managed Symantec Antivirus protection • No Access to FIT or OAS (IBIS, ISIS) • No Remote Desktop accessibility

  8. Making Wireless More Secure • Data security is of primary importance • Provides a trusted computing environment using Virtual Private Network (VPN) technology • Users authenticate before using the wireless services • Wireless traffic is encrypted automatically

Coverage Maps for HHDEV Wireless is currently available in the following HHD buildings.  We cannot guarantee coverage throughout entire buildings due to the nature of radio transmissions, but are focusing mainly on classrooms and common spaces.  The links below will bring up maps of the access point locations for the various buildings and will describe where you can expect coverage. • Henderson South • Henderson North (in the coming year) • Henderson East (in the coming year) • Rec Hall (in the coming year)
