  2. Definition of important terms • Refrain: lines that are repeated • Tercet: a 3 line stanza in a poem • Quatrain: 4 line stanza

  3. Villanelle format • Villanelle: 19 line poem • This French syllabic form has no set number of syllables per line; common choices seem to be between eight and eleven. The villanelle is marked most distinctively by its alternating refrain, which appears initially in the first and third lines of the opening tercet. In all, it comprises five tercets and a concluding quatrain

  4. Follow along as I read through the poem… • Label the end words that rhyme with each other with a letter. • IE: all words that rhyme with “night” mark with an “a”, all words that rhyme with “day” mark with a “b”. • What is the rhyme scheme for a villanelle?

  5. With your group • Interpret the poem, stanza by stanza. • One person will write the interpretation on the poem. The other three copies will be left here for other classes to use.
