  1. Africa-CORDEX simulations Rossby Centre, SMHI Colin Jones, Grigory Nikulin, Erik Kjellström, Marco Kuipianen, Patrick Samuelsson, Michael Kolax, Ulf Hansson, Anders Ullerstig, Christer Jansson, Klaus Wyser and Barry Broman

  2. CORDEX Phase I experiment design Model Evaluation Framework Climate Projection Framework Multiple regions (Initial focus on Africa) 50km resolution (higher in some regions, Europe: 12km) ERA-Interim BC 1979-2010 RCP4.5, RCP8.5 RCP2.6 Multiple AOGCMs Regional Analysis Regional Databanks Historical Period 1950-2005 Projections 2006-2100

  4. 2m temperature ANN 1980-2005 2m minimum and maximum temperature ANN 1980-2005

  5. Precipitation JFM 1980-2005 Precipitation JAS 1980-2005

  6. JFM Precipitation Difference from GPCC JAS Precipitation Difference from GPCC

  7. CMIP5 GCM forced historical runs 1950-2005

  8. RCA4 Africa CORDEX 50km matrix ✔ Completed ✔ Running✔ Planned Possible ? LBC status unknown

  9. !!! Important News Flash !!! CORDEX data will now be saved and made available through the Earth System Grid as used for CMIP5 The system will include a file/format compliancy checker run prior to data upload CORDEX is being built into the new ESG P2P release SMHI testing upload-broadcast-download of RCA4 CORDEX data. We will (hopefully) broadcast all our Africa-CORDEX simulations N. Hem. summer 2012

  10. ESG-CORDEX efforts led by BADC, DKRZ and IPSL plus SMHI, NSC and DMI (EU FP7 is-ENES project) DKRZ (Ger), BADC (UK) & IPSL (Fr) will provide some ESG-CORDEX data archiving facilities in ~fall 2012 SMHI/NSC (Sweden), DMI (Denmark) in early 2013 UCT (Africa), IITM (India), KMA (Korea) hopefully 2013

  11. CMIP5 GCM forced historical runs 1950-2005

  12. GCM simulated SLP JAS 1980-2005 RCM downscaled SLP JAS 1980-2005

  13. GCM simulated SLP JFM 1980-2005 RCM downscaled SLP JFM 1980-2005

  14. GCM precipitation OND 1980-2005 RCM downscaled precipitation OND 1980-2005

  15. Mean Annual Cycle of precipitation: Africa

  16. Mean Annual Cycle of precipitation: West Africa (North)

  17. Mean Annual Cycle of precipitation: Ethiopian Highlands

  18. Summary CORDEX simulations will now be stored through the ESG Over Africa RCMs have more ‘freedom’ to perform than in mid-latitudes (less constrained by boundaries) This means they can retain many of their positive and negative characteristics when driven by different GCMs SMHI Africa-CORDEX data will be available on the ESG summer 2012.
