FLIPPED CLASSROOM ACTIVITY- STRESS AND STRAIN

This activity focuses on the basic concepts of stress and strain, components of stress, behavior of stress and strain under loading, and the relation between stress and strain. The in-class activities include problem-solving, drawing stress-strain curves, and understanding material properties. The active learning strategies include Think Pair Share and Peer Instruction.

  2. Table of Contents

  3. Neema Therese

  4. Out-of-class Activity Design -1 Learning Objectives of Out-of-Class Activity At the end of watching the videos student should be able to: 1. The basic concept of stress and strain (Understand level) 2. The components of stresses (Understand level) 3. The behaviour of stress and strain under loading (Understand Level) 4. The relation between Stress and Strain (Apply Level) Key Concepts to be covered Introduction to Stress and Strain Components of Stress Introduction to Strain

  5. Out-of-class Activity Design - 2

  6. Out-of-class Activity Design - 3 Aligning Assessment with Learning Objective

  7. Out-of-class Activity Design - 3 Aligning Assessment with Learning Objective

  8. Out-of-class Activity Design - 3 Aligning Assessment with Learning Objective Expected total activity duration : 20 mins

  9. In-class Activity Design -1 Learning Objectives of In-Class Activity At the end of the class, students will be able to 1. Solve the problems related to Stress and Strain; Young’s Modulus; Poisson’s ratio. 2. Draw the stress strain curve of a rod under tensile loading. 3. Understand the relation between Stress and Strain. Key Concepts to be covered Normal Stress, Normal Strain, Shear Stress Shear Strain Hooks Law, Material Properties

  10. In-class Activity Design -2 Active Learning activity(ies) that you plan to do Learn by doing Activity Think Pair Share Explain the strategy by giving details of What will the teacher do: Clarify the doubts the students have from watching the videos Clarify the doubts the students have from watching the videos Give Advanced problems to solve and think in class Set the students to take in the Think Par Share Activity What Will Student Do Students will follow the instructions of the teacher and take up the learning activity Justification: Students will be able to think and solve the problems by themselves; the students will have active participation in class

  11. In-class Activity Design -2 Active Learning activity(ies) that you plan to do Real world problem solving using. • Think-Pair-Share Concept clarification using. • Peer Instruction

  12. In-class Activity Design -2 Peer Instruction Strategy – What Teacher Does Pose the two PI questions at the start of the class and provide summary of basic identities and expression simplification. Q 1 : Find the Young’s modulus of elasticity for the material which is 200 cm long, 7.5 cm wide and 15 cm deep. Tie material is subjected to axial force of 4200 KN. As a result material is stretched 2.67 cm. Hint: Using V4; out-class activity Q:3

  13. In-class Activity Design -2 Peer Instruction Strategy – What Teacher Does  Q 2: A wire of a length 1m and diameter of 0.4mm is hung from a ceiling. Find the extension caused in the wire, by attaching a weight of 100N, if the material of the wire has the Young's modulus (E) of 200x10^(11)Nm-2 Hint: Apply what you learned from V1,V2 and V3

  14. In-class Activity Design -2 • Peer Instruction Strategy – What Student Does • For each question they will first vote individually. • Then they will discuss with peers and come to consensus. • Listen to instructors explanation.

  15. In-class Activity Design -2 TPS Strategy – What Instructor does A topic is to be given to the students for discussion in the class. They are given time to think on the topic given to them. They are asked to discuss among themselves and the answers will be discussed in the class. Any clarification on the concepts required will be cleared by me.

  16. In-class Activity Design -2 TPS Strategy Think (3 minutes): When a load is given to the body what all stresses will be developed in the body. Discuss. Pair (5 minutes) : The students are divided into a group of 4 and are asked to discuss on the question given. Share (10minutes)- The opinion of each group is discussed in the class and the clarification on the concept if required is given.

  17. In-class Activity Design -2 Justify why the above is an active learning strategy In both the above strategies, students are required to go beyond mere listening, copying the notes and execution of prescribed steps. They are required to think deeply about the content they were familiarized in out-of-class, do higher order thinking and come up with solutions for the problems given to them..
