  6. What do we do in Readers’ Workshop?

  7. All That in One Handy-Dandy Notebook!? Yessiree, that’s all they need! They’ll start a new one each quarter. • On Monday, students receive everything they need for the week. • They’ll create a tab with the week’s date. • Each day, they will record their learning target. • They will use their notebook for all the week’s notes, activities, etc. • The notebook contains a log for them to monitor progress towards their goals. • The current writing project is in their notebook as well.

  8. What does the classroom look like during our writing instruction?

  9. Where is their Writing Portfolio? • Students will keep all their work for the current writing project in their portfolio. • They may take it home if they need to finish something at home. • Once they are finished with a project, they turn it in. • I will send it home for you to review. • I will keep it for them until the end of the year.

  10. Wait a minute! I didn’t see Social Studies anywhere! • Social Studies is integrated into our daily reading and writing lessons. • Every 4-5 weeks, we will begin a new “Unit of Study” • US Geography • Economics and Market Economy • Explorers and their Adventures • Famous People in History • American Revolution • Civics – our Constitutional Rights and Responsibilities as Citizens • The 20th Century

  11. A few words on Homework… • Homework is meant to give students an opportunity to practice what they’ve learned or finish something they need a little extra time to work on. • In general, vocabulary work will be due every Wednesday, handwriting practice due every Thursday, and I will collect their notebooks every Friday. • Homework is posted on the board each Monday. Students also post it on Edmodo daily. • Project due dates are always given at least two weeks in advance. These are always done IN CLASS. If your child needs extra time, they may allow them to work on it at home or stay for our “writing lab” on Thursdays after school from 2:15-3:30. Please email me or send a note in your child’s agenda if they will be staying. You need to pick them up by 3:30.

  12. “Seven Days Without Reading Makes One Weak” • Students should read 30 minutes every day. • Their reading material can be a book, magazine, letters, etc. • Keep a book in the car, write your child a letter, etc. RP (Renaissance Place) • A reading incentive program • They are working towards a reading goal and we are striving to meet a class goal as well. • “What level is my child?” • “How many points has my child earned?” • https://hosted257.renlearn.com/68415/HomeConnect/Login.aspx • Student ID # for Login • Student Birthday (mmyyyy) for password

  13. Grading Policy Standard Grading Scale vs. Rubric Example: Vocabulary Test Student Scores 8/10 Student Percentage 80% Example: Student Reading Journal Student Score 3/5 based on Rubric Evaluation Does that mean a 60%? NO! 5 = Greatly Exceeds Expectations 4 = Exceeds Expectations 3 = Meets Expectations 2 = Needs Improvement 1 = Unsatisfactory or Incomplete

  14. On-line Resources • Study Island - studyisland.com • Edmodo – edmodo.com • Your child’s login is their lunch number • Your child’s password is their birthday (mmyyyy)

  15. How can I help my child prepare for middle school? • Teach them the value of education and the importance of following school rules. • Give them an environment free from distractions where they can complete their schoolwork. • Hold them accountable for their own learning. Give positive feedback when they do great things; guide them in the direction for seeking help on their own when they are struggling. • Stay in touch. Please check your email frequently and email me if you have any questions.
