  1. ORGANIZATIONAL DEVELOPMENT A ZAMBIAN SCENARIO COMPARATIVE STUDY

  2. COMMON OD DEFINITION Organization Development is the process through which an organization develops the internal capacity to most efficiently and effectively provide its mission work and to sustain itself over the long term.

  3. MULTINATIONAL COMPANIES • Political, regulatory, cultural, traditional, and international best practices are key considerations in engaging with the evolving economic climate. • Mechanisation, technologies, and human resource development for optimum operating levels and peak productivity.

  4. MULTINATIONAL COMPANIES CONTD... • Management mindsets acknowledge the value of external audits, innovation, outsourced expertise, and burden sharing in respect to responsibility and authority.

  5. FAMILY OWNED BUSINESS • Limit the senior management structures to family members only • Prevents fresh and open thinking and candid evaluation of company operations • No regard for relevant experience, training, understanding of underlying issues • Company directors and management will often be frustrated by the lack of vibrant growth, stifled working atmosphere, and limited resources

  6. FAMILY OWNED BUSINESS CONTD... • Information and communication technologies are often shunned • Cost saving measures which include low salaries, tight and cumbersome security mechanisms, intolerance towards dissenting views, and short term business goals • Staff are often demoralised and disillusioned as they acknowledge that glass ceilings block them from promotions

  7. OD CHALLENGES AND THE WAY FORWARD • Sole franchise holder of a product or service will guarantee business success and good profits • Effective tool for managing economic activity in the country is to introduce legislation and regulation • Statutory Bodies - Policing their sector and disciplining deviant and non conforming companies

  8. OD CHALLENGES AND THE WAY FORWARD CONTD... • Value of outsourced expertise represented by employees in the roles of accountants, managers, directors, and advisors • Micro management is considered keeping a good eye on the business while concepts of shrinkage and controlled pilferage are not easily accepted

  9. OD CHALLENGES AND THE WAY FORWARD CONTD...1 • Socialist commandist government oversight is still considered relevant even in a free market economy at the expense of more relevant mechanisms • Active competition • Unfair advantage that should be removed, rather than should be matched

  10. OD CHALLENGES AND THE WAY FORWARD CONTD...2 • Value of skilled labour is yet to be mainstreamed in company operations and is yet to be closely linked to company efficiency and productivity • Pro active consideration of Zambia’s competitiveness before signing treaties and agreements
