  3. Shema Hear O Israel, the Lord is our God. The Lord alone. Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your might. And Love your neighbor as yourself. Amen.

  4. Israel Destroyed • Assyrians conquered Israel in 722. • They were brutal – killed most people • Those not killed sent to far area of empire • Brought in people from other places • They wanted to know how to worship this local god. • Became the Samaritans, 2 Kings 17:24-29 • The tribes of Israel were gone

  5. Amos • Judgment on Israel’s neighbors • God is counting sins – He is keeping a record • Consequences of sin are coming • Judgment on Israel • Deny justice • Trample poor • Live selfish lives • Call to repentance • Amos pleads with God to not destroy Israel • The people don’t care – they feel secure in their strength • Amos is told to leave Israel – they don’t want to hear him – Amos 7:12

  6. 2 Kings 17:13-15 Yet the LORD testified against Israel and against Judah, by all of His prophets, every seer, saying, "Turn from your evil ways, and keep My commandments and My statutes, according to all the law which I commanded your fathers, and which I sent to you by My servants the prophets." Nevertheless they would not hear, but stiffened their necks, like the necks of their fathers, who did not believe in the LORD their God. And they rejected His statutes and His covenant that He had made with their fathers, and His testimonies which He had testified against them; they followed idols, became idolaters, and went after the nations who were all around them, concerning whom the LORD had charged them that they should not do like them.

  7. Isaiah 8:6-8 Because this people has rejected the gently flowing waters of Shiloah and rejoices over Rezin and the son of Remaliah, therefore the Lord is about to bring against them the mighty floodwaters of the River – the king of Assyria with all his pomp. It will overflow all its channels, run over all its banks and sweep on into Judah, swirling over it, passing through it and reaching up to the neck.

  8. Judah Destroyed • Babylonians conquer Judah in 586 BC • Barely escape the Assyrians – righteousness of King Hezekiah and Isaiah • They end up no better than Israel • The land is emptied, people brought to Babylon • 2 Chronicles 36:21

  9. What about God’s promises • Jews asking why did this happen? • They came to the conclusion it was for not following God’s laws • In Babylon they rededicated themselves to the Torah • 70 years later they were allowed to return • 2 Chronicles 36:22-23

  10. Next week • Essenes • Orthodox Jews
