  1. Conflict Between Israel and Judah 1 Kings, Chapters 15 - 16

  2. Conflict Between Israel and Judah The kingdoms of Judah and Israel continue to battle each other... Today we are going to review the reigns of seven kings: —two from Judah (Kings Abijah and Asa) and —five from Israel (Kings Nadab, Baasha, Ela, Zimiri, Omri)

  3. Abijah, King of Judah1 Kings 14:31 - 15:8 ; 2 Chronicles 13:1 - 14:1 Abijah, became king in place of his father, Rehoboam. He reigned for 3 years. “There was war between Abijah and Jeroboam.. Abijah was nearly surrounded and ambushed by Jeroboam but God can Abijah the victory. “He committed all the sins his father had done before him; his heart was not fully devoted to the LORD his God, as the heart of David his forefather had been.” His son, Asa, succeeded him as king.

  4. Asa, King of Judah1 Kings 15:8-24; 2 Chronicles 14:1-16:14 Asa, became king & reigned over Judah for 41 years. Asa spent the first 35 years of his doing what was right in the eyes of the LORD (1 Kings 15:11). Through the Holy Spirit, a prophet told Asa: “The LORD is with you when you are with him. If you seek him, he will be found by you, but if you forsake him, he will forsake you. For a long time Israel was without the true God, without a priest to teach and without the law.” King Asa got rid of the idols and the temple shrine prostitutes. He repaired the Temple. He put a stop to the open worship of false gods.

  5. Asa, King of Judah1 Kings 15:8-24; 2 Chronicles 14:1-16:14 With God's help, Asa conquered all his enemies. There was peace for 35 years... In the 36th year, Asa was attacked by King Baasha of Israel. However, instead of calling upon the Lord for help, Asa entered into a treaty with the king of Syria. Asa won the military victory but his spurning of God resulted in many more wars. Asa even went so far as to oppress his own people! Over time, Asa contracted a painful disease in his feet. He consulted doctors but never sought the Lord. Asa died in misery his old age.

  6. Nadab, King of Israel1 Kings 15:25 - 32 Nadab, became king after his father Jeroboam and reigned over Israel for 2 years. “He did evil in the eyes of the LORD, walking in the ways of his father and in his sin, which he had caused Israel to commit.” Baasha, the son of Ahijah plotted against Nadab and struck him down in the midst of a raid against a Philistine town. Baasha eventually executes the rest of Jeroboam’s family. On the one hand, the Bible points to this as the fulfillment of what God predicted through the prophet Ahijah (15:29-30). On the other hand, God does NOT support this violent and evil act by Baasha—God punishes him for it (16:7)!

  7. Baasha, King of Israel1 Kings 15:27 – 16:7 Baasha ruled as the king of Israel for 24 years and did evil in the eyes of the Lord just as Jeroboam had done. The word of the Lord came to a man named Jehu who prophesies against Baasha. "I lifted you up from the dust and made you leader of my people Israel, but you walked in the ways of Jeroboam... ...So I am about to consume Baasha and his house, and I will make your house like that of Jeroboam...” Baasha’s condemnation by the word of the prophet was because of Baasha's treachery and general state of evilness.

  8. Elah and Zimri, Kings of Israel1 Kings 16:8 – 20 Baasha’s son, Elah, becomes the next king of Israel. He reigns for two years. Zimri, an official in Elah's court, plots against Elah, and strikes him down while Elah is getting drunk in the home of another person. Zimri assumes the throne and becomes the next king of Israel. Zimri kills off Baasha's entire family. Zimri ruled for seven days because the people of Israel find out about his treachery and declare Omri, the commander of the army, as king instead. Zimri goes home and kills himself by lighting the palace on fire.

  9. Omri, King of Israel1 Kings 16:16 – 208 The divided kingdom gets divided again, but not for long... After the death of Zimri, "half of the people" followed a king named Tibni. However, Omri's people overcame Tibni's people (in less than two verses), and Omri becomes the undisputed king of the Northern Kingdom. King Omri buys land and builds his new capital city, Samaria, named after the guy (Shemer) from whom he bought it. Omri reigns in Israel for 12 years. “But Omri did evil in the eyes of the LORD and sinned more than all those before him.”
