Need Statement Pilot workshop new internationals at INTO, CSU Different class atmosphere & Pedagogy Speaking & Discussion: Develop linguistic accuracy, communicative competence One time pre-semester orientation exists Sequential weekly 4 meetings: follow up students’ current issues, & concerns timely Stake holders: Program director, faculty, staff

Audience Analysis • Heterogeneous international students with various English competence level • Preparing, conditionally admitted to above college level • Survey - Language skills: Grammar, pronunciation - Discussion: Expression, fluency • Reflection • Words definition required • Change question order

  4. Goals & Objectives • Speaking • Pronunciation: articulation, intonation, rhythm & stress • Grammar, common idioms, and academic lexicon • Discussion - Similarities/differences between their own country vs. USA - Construct content with relevant details - Relationship between ideas: compare/contrast, cause/effect • Self-directed learning - Rate regular English practices using learning logs - Use website resources

  5. Content Outline Timeframe Language Objectives Content Objectives Instruction features - Scaffolding - Partner interaction - Assessment - Students engaged - Hands-on material 90 min. Tense, writing, speaking Shopping Activities - Cloze exercise for tense - Pair work - Review the answers

  6. Assessment • Integrated: 4 skills in authentic context, ex) reading+speaking: summary, writing+listening. • On-going: monitor the students’ needs throughout lessons • Self & peer: • increase students’ participation • own realization about improvement

  7. Evaluation Formative - Early course evaluation, discussion - Modify parts of teachingcontents and instructional materials, and revise objectives. Summative - Course evaluation: E-mail feedback, on the spot - About course, an instructor, and students Stakeholders
