  1. Instructional Design Becka Lopez

  2. My child’s name is Astra. She turned 6 in September. She is shy and quiet when one first meets her. She has a very fun and happy personality.

  3. Astra and her family are from the Marshall Islands, which are about 6,000 miles away from the United States. Her mom and dad both speak Marshallese. The children don’t speak Marshallese, only English. Currently she lives in an apartment on Grant and Alvernon.

  4. There are 5 people living in Astra’s apartment right now. • Hera is Astra’s mother • Reagan is Astra’s father • Astra has an older sister named Lani, who is 7 years old, and a younger sister named Aahana, who is 4 years old.

  5. Looking at Astra in a linguistic way, I was surprised to find out that she was even considered to be an ELL. Her language form is strong. She speaks in a grammatically correct way. She understands word order. During our home interaction, she was forming complete sentences. She would say things like, “I play tag, I play ring around the rosie, I play swings”. This showed me that she has a clear grasp of English grammar.

  6. Observing Astra at Wright Elementary, I have seen her spend a lot of time outside in the sandbox. I have pictures and videos of her making cakes, adding sprinkles, making milkshakes, using the sand in the sandbox. During free choice, Astra is usually found at the doll-dressing station or the dollhouse station. During our home interaction, she told me that she loves to dance with her sisters, and play at the park on the swings and monkey bars.

  7. Astra’s Strengths and Weaknesses • Astra’s Strengths: • She is strong at recognizing visual cues • She is good at sticking with her work until she is done • She is good at book handling • She is good at patterns • She is good at beginning letter sounds • She is good at comprehending the text • Astra’s Areas for Improvement: • She lacks confidence to try to sound out words • She struggles with semantics • Self-monitoring strategies

  8. From observing and getting to know Astra this semester, I know she is extremely family-oriented. She enjoys drawing pictures of her and her family. She enjoys playing with her sisters outdoors. • She is a fast learner. She is almost always the first student done with every activity we have to do in class.

  9. My Plan! • During a reading on November 7th, 2013 that Astra did with a book called, “The Park”, she mistook the phrase “the playground” for “the park”. She mistook “on” for “to”. She also read “the” when the word was “a”. She read “go” instead of “like”, and “eat” instead of “go”. (video on my phone) • I planned on focusing on Astra’s use of semantics for my lesson.

  10. Lesson • I made Astra a book using the pictures that she took from her camera. Most of the pictures were of her materials that she used to prepare for Halloween and there were also many, many pictures of Astra and her family. • In the book, I tried to incorporate patterns and as many sight words as I possibly could. • (video on my phone)

  11. Astra LOVED the story! She carried it around with her all day after we read it. • She read the story the first time, and I did have to help her a lot because the vocabulary was a little difficult for her to handle. • She was able to recognize the patterns that I put into the book, and she recognized the visual cues that I gave her, which was exciting! • After reading the story once, Astra wanted to read it again. She read the story with much more confidence.
