  2. Intro to Progeria • This genetic disorder is as rare as it is sever. The classic form of the disease, called Hutchinson-Gilford Progeria, causes accelerated • most children die of age related diseases at the age of 13 that have Progeria • But some can live to 20 years old, death usually is by heart attack or stroke

  3. Causes • Progeria effects as few as one per eight million live births • the disease is caused by a mutation in the LMNA gene, a protein that provides support to the cell include rigid (sclerotic) skin, full body baldness (alopecia), bone abnormalities, growth impairment, and a characteristic “sculptured” nasal tips

  4. Facts • Another name for Progeria is HGPS • It is a rare fatal genetic condition • Its name derived from Greek and means “prematurely old” why there are different types of progeria

  5. Other types if Progeria • Werner’s syndrome: also known as “adult Progeria” which doesn’t onset until the late teen years, with a lifespan into the 40’s and 50’s

  6. Signs of progeria • There are an estimated 200-250 children living with Progeria • Children look healthy through when born • They with in the first year of life there are tell-tell signs
