  2. Heading • All writing pieces must have a proper heading that includes your name, the date, the class, and your professor’s name. (Journals are the only exception, as they do not need a title.) 5) Title

  3. Contractions and Pronouns • Avoid contractions. • Avoid second person pronoun • Examples: • Don’t = Do not • Can’t = Cannot • Won’t = Will not • Example: • When it is raining you can really feel the humidity in the air.

  4. Length3-paragraphs for In-Class writing • Introductory paragraph • The introductory paragraph should also include the thesis statement, a kind of mini-outline for the essay. This is where the writer grabs the reader's attention. It tells the reader what the paper is about. • Body - second paragraph • This paragraph should include the strongest argument, most significant example, cleverest illustration, or an obvious beginning point. • Concluding - third paragraph • The third paragraph is the summary paragraph. It is important to restate the thesis and the supporting idea in an original and powerful way as this is the last chance the writer has to convince the reader of the validity of the information presented.

  5. Spell Check Look for the spell check icon and click on it to spell check every written piece before you turn it in to be graded. *Remember the spell checker won’t catch every error, so you must also read through your essay and double check.

  6. Common Mistakes • 1. Your vs. You’re • 2. It’s vs. Its • 3. There vs. Their vs. They’re • 4. Affect vs. Effect • 5. To vs. Too • 6. Double negative (i.e. I don’t have no money.) • 7. Text speak (i.e. "In da Bginnin God cre8d da heavens & da earth.“)
